Invitation to Prague
The XXVI th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, in a city with a rich astronomical history going back to the middle of XIV th century, when the oldest central European university was established there. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, with more than 1.2 million inhabitants is a thousand years old town, being rich since ancient times not only in its beauty but literally in its unique history. For a thousand years, Prague has been the seat of kings, emperors and presidents. Its atmosphere and beauty are not given only by its location, but also by the unique joining of the artistic monuments from various ages and by its modern life and progressive development. Prague, the center of industrial, cultural and scientific life, is known by its famous cultural events.
History of Astronomy
Prague is also interesting by its rich history of astronomy and physics. The outstanding personalities are represented, for example, by Tycho Brahe who is buried in the Týn church in Prague, Johannes Kepler who's stay in Prague (1600 - 1612) resulted in the discovery of the famous laws of planetary motion, and Christian Doppler - professor of mathematics at Prague Technical University (1835 - 1847), who formulated his well known principle in Prague. Further, Ernst Mach (who was appointed professor of experimental physics at Prague University in 1867 and spent nearly 30 years in Prague) contributed to the development of several parts of physics. Albert Einstein was without any doubt the most famous physicist who worked in Prague (1911 - 1912). In his own words he found there "the necessary concentration for giving a more precise form to the basic idea of the general theory of relativity".

    Introduction
You can read two essays on feminism in the Czech Republic:
  • The Viscitudes of Czech Feminism Why Western Feminism Isn't Working in the Czech Republic
  • The Viscitudes of Czech Feminism
    by
For somebody observing the situation from outside the country, the history of Czech feminism may seem to be limited to the era after the Velvet Revolution and the subsequent implementation of various Western discourses in the sociocultural milieu of the new democracy. Before 1989, the word "feminism" was almost never used to designate any phenomenon present in Czechoslovakia, it referred to Western ideology which was presented as not applicable to the situation of Czech women'. But this fact is only a question of naming, and even without using the word "feminism", Czech lands have a long tradition of dealing with women's issues, especially in the sphere of education. If we turn to the real historiography, we can see that women participated very actively in major events throughout the history of Czech lands, but there are especially two major historical periods that should not escape our attention, because they provide token examples of the position of women in society at the time: the Hussites movement and the Czech National Revival. The Hussites movement is famous for its emphasis on equality and the demand that the Bible should be available in the language of the people (at the time when all Masses were in Latin) and that everyone be educated to read and understand the Word, which addressed both men and women. Their ideals of equality attracted an enormous number of people, without a radical separation of the two sexes. As the Hussites period has always been considered one of the most important events in Czech history, so, many times, the necessity of education for both sexes was taken for granted as vital for the good of the nation(3).

http://www.musica.cz/comp/kalabis.htm
Viktor Kalabis - Czech Contemporary Composer
Viktor Kalabis / born 27 February 1923, Cerveny Kostelec / studied composition at the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Arts and Music under Emil Hlobil and and Jaroslav Ridky (1945 - 1952) and at the sane time philosophy and musical science at Charles University. Between 1953 - 1972 he was employed as an editor and musical producer of the Czechoslovak Radio in Prague, since 1972 he has devoted himself exclusively to creation.
Although miost of the works by Viktor Kalabis belong to the sphere of the so-called absolute music, we must not fail to mention his vocal compositions - songs and choirs for children settings of folk poetry, and others. For Tereza Csaibok and the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra was written his cycle Five Romantic Love Songs to Words by R.M. rilke (sung on a gramophone record by Ernst Haeflinger). His first and so far only excursion to the sphere of stage forms was his ballet in two parts called "Two Worlds", inspired by L. Carroll s book "Alice in Wonderland".
The compositions by Viktor Kalabis won a number of prizes in state-wide competitions. In 1967 he was awarded the Prize of Czechoslovak Musical Critics, in 1969 the Klement Gottwald State Prize. In 1983 he was named Artist of Merit. However, great apreciation is represented by the fact that his works are constantly on the repertories of prominent Czechoslovak and world performing artists.

116. Jiri Kalach - Czech Contemporary Composer
(1934 ), Prague, czech republic. Biography and selected works from the czech Music Information Project.
http://www.musica.cz/comp/kalach.htm
Jiri Kalach - Czech Contemporary Composer
Born in Prague on 9th March 1934, Jiri Kalach was brought up in a musical family. His father was a composer, violist and a founder member of the Symphony Orchestra of the Barrandov Film Studios. After finshing grammar school he entered the Prague Conservatory, where his teachers were Frantisek Picha, Frantisek Broz and Emil Hlobil. In 1957 Jiri Kalach graduated with a violin concerto and went on to the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. He graduated in 1961 (this degree composition was the Concerto for Flute and Orchestra) and afterwards worked as a free lance composer. Since 1990 he has been working as a dramatic adviser in Czechoslovak Radio.
Looking at the list his works we can see mainly instrumental compositions headed by five symphonies; chamber compositions include six string quartets, three violin sonatas and many other works. In these compositions the author realized his concept of a perfectly balanced unity, decorated with fine details. He concentrated particularly on absolute forms. Compositions of the 80s express certain moments of the author s philosophical attitude.
The following four compositions, written between 1984 and 1990, represent the high point, both artistic and philosophical, of Jiri Kalach s work principally in Lukumo (1984), rhapsody for violin, mixed chorus, harp and percussion, inspred by the novel Mysterlous Etruscan by Mika Valtari. Lukumos were people chosen by the Gods as spiritual leaders of the nation. Erasmus (1988) is a meditation for violn and orchestra celebrating Erasmus of Rotterdam. In the third composition Hommage a Albert Schweitzer (1989) for mixed choir, organ and orchestra, the composer depiets Albert Schweitzer as a humanist, scientist and musician. The text of this work is based on the Latin version of the Hippocratic oath. Jiri Kalach considers Albert Schweitzer to be a person who fully adhered to this oath. Czech Rhapsody (1990) is an orchestral composition conclued by Old Czech Lord s Prayer.
