In the area of the present-day Czech Republic exists in the seventh century the state of Samo and in the ninth century the Greater Moravian State . In 880 the Duchy of Bohemia is founded. Hungary destroys Greater Moravia in 906 and annexes Slovakia to Hungary (until 1918). Slovakia shares its history with Hungary. In the 10th century Bohemia, renamed Kingdom of Bohemia in 1198, becomes one of the states inside the German Empire . Under the house of Luxembourg Bohemia is the leading German state and for some time its capital Prague is capital of Germany. Bohemia is absorbed into the Habsburgian countries (see Austria ) inside Germany in 1527. This is confirmed in the 1620 war and the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. By then Bohemia's elective kingship is abolished making Bohemia a hereditary possession of the archdukes of Austria. In 1804 Bohemia becomes a kingdom under the Empire of Austria. In 1849 it becomes a separate Austrian crownland and since 1867 it is part of the "Austrian" half of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Despite cultural differences, the Slovaks share with the Czechs similar aspirations for independence from the Habsburg state and after the defeat of Austria-Hungary they voluntarily unite into Czechoslovakia

Vilem Precan: Eyes Wide Open
Andrew Yurkovsky
World Press Review senior editor Czech historian Vilem Precan, who turned 70 this year, used to be an idealistic man of the left before he cast a critical eye on the history of what was once Czechoslovakia. He began with the 1944 Slovak National Uprising, an important event in the official version of communist anti-Nazi resistance. He moved on to the 1968 Soviet invasion, which interrupted the political reforms known as the Prague Spring. Interest in the latter cost him his professional livelihood. He worked at menial jobs for several years before choosing a life of exile and settling in Germany, where he set up an important center for samizdat literature. “More than anything else, I wanted to be an academic historian—the kind who sits in an archive and then publishes books. But life took another course,” Precan recalls in a profile in the Prague daily Mlada Fronta Dnes (April 25). If in the beginning his eyes were clouded by communist propaganda, everyday life and research in archives set him on the right path.

The History of Wine in the Czech Republic
Early on there was a fascination with white wines, but during the 15th century red wines became the accepted standard, with several varieties of note including Sauvingnon Blanc and Rouge. Of interest were the Baptist monks who travelled through Bohemia, establishing monasteries and vineyards as they expanded their sphere of influence. Around the turn of the 20th Century interest in wine was replaced by cheap beer and brandy, and of course water was clean enough to drink by this time. Only in the last decade, since independence from the USSR has there has been a huge resurgence in the popularity of wine in Czech, and with high import duties on wine, vintners in Czech are making a comeback. Now there are many varieties of grapes grown here, White Reisling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Neuburger, Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, and others covering some 17,000 hectares. In 1995 the Czech Republic established the Viticultural Law that now governs and standardizes the industry and it's production purity. Specialty wines such as Ice and Straw wines are also proving very popular these days.

http://www.cz.openh323.org/articles/history.html
History of Square and Round Dancing in the Czech Republic and Slovakia
Country music and country dances have a long tradition in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. As early as before the World War II, many of our famous or unknown authors have tried to compose their own songs. They took their inspiration from popular American country melodies. Due to the fact that more and more bands and singers have let themselves to be influenced with this style of music, folk and country music is very popular in this country nowadays. Together with an expansion of country music, groups of people trying (more or less successfully) to dance and propagate country dances in public were coming to existence. Particular dances were looked for in old manuals, imported from abroad, many dancers invented their own calls. At that time, the style called Old Time Style was danced. In late 80's there were several dozens of country dance groups in Czechoslovakia. It is interesting that as early as at that time some of square dance singing-call recordings (e.g. Rosalie's Boat or All My Roads ) came to this country. However, nobody was able to distinguish between Old Time Style and modern Square Dance. All the dancers' eyes got opened by the dance group Caramella led by Jiøí "Jeff" Vašák, who as the first one obtained a textbook of modern Square Dance and in summer of 1988 made a trip to München to visit the Dip-n-Divers club. This club, together with its caller Toni Sedlmayr, repayed the visit with coming to Prague in spring of 1989 to support the effort of Caramella in learning Square Dance. At the beginning of the next year, on January 17th, 1990, 25 dancers from Caramella were graduated for the first time by Toni. Although many other clubs visited Czechoslovakia at that time, great thanks go especially to Dip-n-Divers for their work, fullfilling the idea of 'friendship and fun'.

The Czech Republic offers a fascinating social and cultural setting for service-learning because the nation is in an important period of transition from Soviet Communism to independence and privatization of many political, social, educational and cultural institutions. You will gain insight into the complexities of the Czech Republic by directly encountering the problems, challenges and attempted solutions brought about by these changes. Prague
The program is located in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Located in the heart of Europe on the Vltava River, it has been a center of trade, political life, culture, religion, and learning for over a thousand years. In the medieval and Renaissance periods it played a major role as the central city in historic Bohemia and as the capital for a time of the Holy Roman Empire. The famous reformer, Jan Hus, was rector of Charles University, which hosts the program. In the 20th century, Prague was a focus of resistance to Soviet domination of Central Europe. Today, it is a lively cultural center with dozens of daily concerts (at low or no cost), excellent museums and historic sites including the Prague castle, opera, theater, bookstores and bustling cafes and restaurants. Prague is a living museum of European architecture, including Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau.
