Czech Republic - EARLY HISTORY
Czech Republic First Political Units Although a Czechoslovak state did not emerge until 1918, its roots go back many centuries. The earliest records of Slavic inhabitants in present-day Czechoslovakia date from the fifth century A.D. The ancestors of the Czechs settled in present-day Bohemia and Moravia, and those of the Slovaks settled in presentday Slovakia. The settlers developed an agricultural economy and built the characteristically circular Slavic villages, the okroulice The peaceful life of the Slavic tribes was shattered in the sixth century by the invasion of the Avars, a people of undetermined origin and language who established a loosely connected empire between the Labe (Elbe) and Dnieper rivers. The Avars did not conquer all the Slavic tribes in the area, but they subjugated some of them and conducted raids on others. It was in response to the Avars that Samoa foreigner thought to be a Frankish merchantunified some of the Slavic tribes and in A.D. 625 established the empire of Samo. Although the territorial extent of the empire is not known, it was centered in Bohemia and is considered the first coherent Slavic political unit. The empire disintegrated when Samo died in 658. A more stable polity emerged in Moravia. The Czech tribes of Moravia helped Charlemagne destroy the Avar Empire (ca. 796) and were rewarded by receiving part of it as a fief. Although the Moravians paid tribute to Charlemagne, they did enjoy considerable independence. Early in the ninth century, Mojmira Slavic chiefformed the Moravian Kingdom. His two successors expanded its domains to include Bohemia, Slovakia, southern Poland, and western Hungary. The expanded kingdom became known as the Great Moravian Empire. Its importance to Czechoslovak history is that it united in a single state the ancestors of the Czechs and Slovaks.

History of the Czech Republic BRIEF HISTORY The territory was first inhabited sometimes around year 500 A.D. by Slavonic Tribes.  The first Slavonic state was called after a rich businessman Samo.   The Samo's Empire was founded in 623.  With further development and uniting of Slavonic tribes, the early mightyfeudal Great Moravian Empire was formed in 9th century.   After its disintegration, state activities were concentrated in the Czech Lands where in the 9th century power was taken over by the Czech tribe headed by the Premyslid family.  The first historically documented prince Borivoj I. ruled over the territory of the Czech Lands and over a considerable part of Great Moravia. The Czech princes and later the Czech kings played an important role in central Europe.  When the Premyslid dynasty had died out by the sword in 1306 and, after several years of instability, the Czech throne went by way of dynastic wedding to the Luxemburgs, and the Czech Kingdom became also the center of the Holy Roman Empire mainly during the reign of the Charles IV. and his son Wenceslas IV.  Nevertheless it was a kingdom quite independent of the Holy Roman Empire, and was ruled by a king, the most important of the seven electors of the emperors.  During the reign of Charles IV. (1346-1378), Prague grew into one of the largest European cities of that era, and was a significant center of education, architecture and the arts.  In 1348 one of the oldest universities in the world The Charles University was found.  In 1357 the most famous bridge in Prague The Charles Bridge was built.

The association has a total membership of some 70,000 (approximately 60% male) operating in a country with a population of around 10.3 million people. Junák is a "Scout and Guide National Organization" in accordance with the Statement on Relationships between WAGGGS and WOSM. Scouting in the Czech Republic has a long and distinguished history. The Czechs were third, after the United Kingdom and Chile, to adopt Scouting. In 1910, inspired by the writings of Robert Baden-Powell, Prof. Antonin B Svojsik wrote the first handbook for Scouts already operating in the Czech lands. He followed this with an experimental camp in 1911, only four years after Baden-Powell's own experimental camp on Brownsea Island. The following year, Svojsik organised a camp, lasting five weeks, during which the first steps were taken towards the establishment of the Scout Movement in the Czech lands, named Junák-Czesky Skaut. In the quickly developing world of Scouting, Junák-Czesky Skaut provided a model to be followed by many other developing national associations, at the time.

History
In the Czech Lands (Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia), which were a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy until 1918, the first audit institution was the Court Accounting Chamber (Hofrechnungskammer) , set up in 1761. The name of the institution whose area of activities was the whole Habsburg monarchy, was changed several times. From 1792 to 1794, it was the Chief State Accounting Office (Staatshauptbuchhaltung) , from 1794 to 1805 the Supreme State Audit (Oberste Staatskontrolle) , and from 1805 to 1840, the name of the institution was General Accounting Directorate (General-Rechnungs-Direktorium) . The Supreme Audit Office (Oberste Rechnungs-Kontroll-Behörde) was established in 1840, and functioned under this name until 1866, when the Supreme Accounting Court (Oberster Rechnungshof) was founded. The Supreme Accounting Court with jurisdiction for the Czech Lands remained in existence until 1919. After the Czechoslovak Republic was founded in 1918, the tradition of this office was continued by the Supreme Accounting and Audit Office in Prague, established in 1919 by the Act on the Establishment and Jurisdiction of the Supreme Audit Office. After 1919, auditing in the Czech Lands comprised treasury audit, administrative audit and state audit. The treasury audit examined the work of executive bodies from the viewpoint of statutory regulations; administrative audit with jurisdiction for all authorities examined whether revenues and expenditures conformed to laws, regulations and ordinances, within the limits of the budget. The third type was the state audit, whose concern was the economic plan for a certain economic or accounting period. It considered whether the state administration was guided by this authoritatively prescribed plan. This type of audit was the constitutional right of the Parliament, which carried it out, on the one hand, by enacting the budget and, on the other hand, by considering the final statement; the audit reviewed the responsibility of the ministries.

12 votes We spent 10 days in one of the most beautiful european city (i mean between those ive ever been to) - A trip in the memory of eastern europe and in the czech new way of life -
Prague is a great place. That's great to take a walk in a city and remember whats you read about its history. Wherever you go, there's always something to tell about the story of this place. Prague is architecturaly awesome, is a cheap place to eat and drink, but there's too much tourists (as we were!!) in august!!
Favourite spots: Museum of communism Josefov Charles bridge by night The castle area
What's really great: I loved the atmosphere, felt like if i was walking in the 19th century... There's something in the air, something historic, kinda magic. Hope to go back in winter to see the Charles bridge under the snow!! And dont forget to taste the local (cheap) beers.

http://www.slovakembassy-us.org/history.html
HISTORY OF SLOVAKIA
From the castle in Bratislava, a symbol of Slovak statehood, it is possible to see with the naked eye the peaks of the Alps, the mountain range which stretches to the south-west up to the shores of the Carpathians, the second mighty mountain range of Europe which ends far to the east, at the plains near the Black Sea. This position of Bratislava and of Slovakia in the middle of Europe, on the border between East and West was and is symbolic. Indeed, its territory was encroached upon or its fate was jointly shaped by great empires: the Roman and Byzantine Empires, by the Frank Empire in the ninth century, by the Osman Empire during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and, in the twentieth century, by Germany and Russia. In Slovakia, significant European intellectual trends and movements exercised long-term influence: Christianity, the Renaissance and Reformation, nationalism, modern liberalism, socialism and even fascism and communism. The history of Slovakia is, therefore, the history of a European region. It was, to be sure, a region, which did not stand at the center of events nor determine their direction. Yet it did take part in important movements of European and world culture and left its mark upon them. But since Slovakia, except for a very brief period of time, did not exist as an independent state, most people knew little about its role in European history. It is hoped that this sketch of the history of Slovakia and the Slovaks will provide at least an introduction to their historical development.
