of Czech Republic
Background:
The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in central Europe.
Before World War I part of Austria-Hungary, in 1918 the Czechs and neighbouring Slovaks joined together and formed the independent republic of Czechoslovakia. In World War II occupied by the Germans in 1939. After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a member of the Warsaw Pact. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist Party rule and create "socialism with a human face" during the "Prague Spring". With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution" and became a sovereign state. On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In 2004 the Czech Republic became a member of the European Union and the NATO.

FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA An era ended in February 2003 when Vaclav Havel's term as president came to an end. The dissident playwright had spearheaded the velvet revolution in 1989 and was the first president of post-Communist Czechoslovakia. His presidency was interrupted for only a few months at the time of the separation of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Mr Havel saw the ghost of former Soviet military influence exorcized in 1999 when the republic was granted full membership of Nato. He left office having led it to the threshold of the EU. His old rival and successor as president, Vaclav Klaus, oversaw the country's accession to the union. The formal invitation to join the EU came despite criticism of policies towards the Roma, or Gypsies, who number up to about 300,000 and who suffer disproportionately high levels of poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment

Czech Security Information Service
The logo of the Czech Security Information Service (BIS) consists of the large version of the national coat of arms, situated on the breast of an eagle and partly covered by the eagle´s wing. The upper part is inscribed with the words "AUDI, VIDE, TACE", the lower part with the acronym "BIS". The eagle symbolizes astuteness, vigilance, tenacity, swiftness and respect - such as this species enjoys among birds. These qualities related to humankind are underlined by the Latin motto "Audi, vide, tace", meaning that an intelligence service member has to be a good listener, keen observer, and must keep silent about his or her work - in other words, must observe the essential principles of intelligence work.
Mission The Security Information Service, whose existence is in the interest of the Czech Republic and its citizens, was set up as a secret service because only as such it can effectively fulfil the tasks defined for it by law. Even though it mostly has to work covertly, it should be remembered that it is funded by the state, that means with money collected from taxpayers who therefore have the right to know how it works and what it does. It pursues a policy of maximum possible openness in relation to the public which, however, is connected also with the declaration of the government policy as an open one, and clearly proves that BIS is an institution of a democratic state.
