Czech Republic Places of Worship
The Czech Republic owes much of its architectural heritage to the many sacred monuments. The religious nature of the places ranges from Jewish, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic. Various wars and fires through the centuries, and also the Communist rule ravaged many monuments, but much restoration has repaired the damage and decay. Approximately 200 synagogues exist in the Czech Republic, a few of which currently offer services. The architectural styles of the synagogues vary from Gothic to Baroque and more. Make sure to visit many of these places during your stay in the Czech Republic.
Czech Republic Key Areas
Karlovy Vary, in the western part of the Czech Republic, is the primary region of mineral spring spas. Historical areas include the chateau of Mostov near Cheb. Find wonderful creations of both pottery and glass, and great winter sports in the mountain area of Krusne hory. Pilsen (or Plzen) offers a great variety in landscapes, and much of the land is agricultural in nature. The tallest spire in the Czech Republic is found at the Church of Bartholomew. The third largest synagogue in Europe also resides in Plzen, home to some entertainment events as well as religious worship. Historical sites fill the region of Usti nad Labem, from a Romanesque rotunda to a monastery in Osek. The region consists of both mountain range areas and flatlands.

Japan-Czech Republic Relations
June 2005
Historical overview of bilateral relations
  • Japan and then-Czechoslovakia established diplomatic relations in 1919, when the latter gained its independence with the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I. Overcoming a lengthy period of diplomatic relations suspension since 1939, Japan resumed its ties with Czechoslovakia in 1957.
When the Czech Republic declared independence in 1993, Japan was among the first countries to welcome the new state by giving it diplomatic recognition. In 1997, both countries celebrated the 40th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Traditionally Japan and the Czech Republic (including the Czechoslovakia era) had enjoyed good relations with no significant pending issues between them, though the differences in political and economic systems kept their relations to a limited extent until the wave of democratization swept over Central and Eastern Europe in 1989. Recently, relations have become much closer in a variety of fields, including political, economic, and cultural areas.

For somebody observing the situation from outside the country, the history of Czech feminism may seem to be limited to the era after the Velvet Revolution and the subsequent implementation of various Western discourses in the sociocultural milieu of the new democracy. Before 1989, the word "feminism" was almost never used to designate any phenomenon present in Czechoslovakia, it referred to Western ideology which was presented as not applicable to the situation of Czech women'. But this fact is only a question of naming, and even without using the word "feminism", Czech lands have a long tradition of dealing with women's issues, especially in the sphere of education. If we turn to the real historiography, we can see that women participated very actively in major events throughout the history of Czech lands, but there are especially two major historical periods that should not escape our attention, because they provide token examples of the position of women in society at the time: the Hussites movement and the Czech National Revival. The Hussites movement is famous for its emphasis on equality and the demand that the Bible should be available in the language of the people (at the time when all Masses were in Latin) and that everyone be educated to read and understand the Word, which addressed both men and women. Their ideals of equality attracted an enormous number of people, without a radical separation of the two sexes. As the Hussites period has always been considered one of the most important events in Czech history, so, many times, the necessity of education for both sexes was taken for granted as vital for the good of the nation(3).
