T H E C Z E C H R E P U B L I C 0. INTRODUCTION The Czech Republic lies in Central Europe. It has 10.3 million inhabitants (mid-1996), mostly of Czech nationality. The minorities, mainly Slovak, Polish, and German, account for about 5 per cent of the population. The official language is Czech, a West Slavonic language. Being a former Eastern Bloc country, most of the people in the Czech Republic are atheists. The breakdown of the religions is as follows: atheists (40 per cent), Roman Catholic (39 per cent), Protestant (5 per cent), Orthodox (3 per cent), other (13 per cent). Like the other countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Czech Republic has also experienced a number of major changes after the 'velvet revolution'. As an independent state, it appeared on the world scene on 1 January 1993 after the division of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. In its democratic development it consistently follows the traditions of Czechoslovakia from the 1918 - 1938 period. 1. GENERAL DIRECTIONS OF CULTURAL POLICY In addition to changing the previous system of national economic planning, the recent political and economic changes, have also reflected in the field of culture, as well as in the structure of responsible bodies and institutions. The Constitution of the Czech Republic guarantees extensive rights and liberties, including the rights and liberties of national minorities.

CZECH BEER FAQ
"A Beer-Drinker's Odyssey Begins on the River Vltava" The world was astounded in 1913 when it was discovered that as many as 19 types of beer were brewed in Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago. It is fitting that the archaeologist who first deciphered the Sumerian tablets containing this information was a Czech, Bedrich Hrozny. Beer was also brewed in the earliest Czech civilizations (there is evidence that hops were already being cultivated here in 859 and were being exported in 903 - the first written documentation referring to brewing dates from 1088), and even British beer authority Michael Jackson agrees that the Czechs are the number one beer-brewing nation in the world today.

Due to the number of breweries in the Czech Republic, we had to split this list up by region, Prague being in Central Bohemia, Plzen in West Bohemia, and Ceske Budejovice in South Bohemia. Where groups of breweries are owned by one company, we've included the breweries of that group in the region where the headquarters is based, and if the individual breweries are actually located in another region, they'll also be listed there.

Description: The six-week program combines academic coursework with the experience of living in a extraordinary medieval city. Prague is an open textbook of modern and traditional literature, art, architecture and culture. The program is held at Charles University, one of the oldest universities in Europe, which looks up to the Prague Castle and Straka's Academy, the seat of the Czech government and the office of its president. The residence hall, where you will stay during the program, is in an interesting area that is diverse and lively. Good inexpensive restaurants, several stores and a post office are in the vicinity. Highlights: During your stay, take the Vienna and Budapest tour and see what the capitals of Austria and Hungary have to offer. Several one-day field trips provide even more opportunities to see the sights within the Czech Republic.
