Each course is described below. Field excursions will be integrated into the curriculum to enhance classroom instruction and can be offered in the afternoons or on alternate days with classroom instruction. Classes requiring laboratories will use some afternoons for labs and others for excursions. All classes will be designed so as to take advantage of the geographical location of the University of South Bohemia and its historical, political, and socioeconomic significance to Europe.

Background:
The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in central Europe.
Before World War I part of Austria-Hungary, in 1918 the Czechs and neighbouring Slovaks joined together and formed the independent republic of Czechoslovakia. In World War II occupied by the Germans in 1939. After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a member of the Warsaw Pact. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist Party rule and create "socialism with a human face" during the "Prague Spring". With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution" and became a sovereign state. On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In 2004 the Czech Republic became a member of the European Union and the NATO.

The consensus is that the Czech Republic contains all that is great about Europe without the European price tags. If you want to live in an advanced culture with great art, great real estate and an excellent lifestyle but you don't want to pay Europe's usurious price tags then the Czech Republic is the place for you. Real Estate in the Czech Republic Ronald Winkles spent 25 years in the U.S. Army. Now retired, he runs a BB in the Czech Republic six months out of the year. It's what he's always wanted to do. Moreover, Winkles says, "The Czech real estate market is poised for another explosion with their entry into the European Union. Thereafter, all EU member nations will be allowed to buy real estate without restriction. Czech has never had fewer than 18 million tourists a year since its borders first opened in 1990. This is one and half times the number of people who live in Czech. Buy now."

Czech Republic History and Culture
History Czechoslovakia was established in 1918 as a national state of the Czechs and Slovaks. Although these two peoples were closely related, they had undergone different historical experiences. Despite their separate strands of development, both Czechs and Slovaks struggled against a powerful neighbor that threatened their very existence. The unity of the Czech and Slovak people in the Great Moravian Empire was brief. From the beginning of the tenth century and for almost a millennium, the two peoples followed separate courses.

The Cultural Section
The cultural section of the Embassy deals with cultural and educational affairs. We try to show British people the very best the Czech Republic has to offer in this area and arouse their interest in Czech culture, history and traditions.
Culture
Most of the work in terms of larger cultural events is carried out by the Czech Centre in London which has corresponding facilities. However, the Embassy is the guardian of cultural exchanges including exhibitions, concerts, book launches, readings or lectures by prominent Czech/British personalities. We also advise in individual cases providing contacts and links to Czech institutions or personal meetings for those taking interest in specific topics.
Education
Major part of the routine work in this field is devoted to encouraging relations among universities and other types of schools with special regard to the study of the Czech language, literature and history at British universities. We also provide information and opportunities for British students to take part in the Summer School of Slavonic Studies courses 2005 in the Czech Republic each year. Most student exchanges, however, are organized directly by the universities themselves.

The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the Government generally respects this right in practice. There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom during the period covered by this report, and government policy continued to contribute to the generally free practice of religion. The generally amicable relationship among religions in society contributed to religious freedom. The U.S. Government discusses religious freedom issues with the Government as part of its overall policy to promote human rights. Section I. Religious Demography The country has a total area of 30,442 square miles, and its population is an estimated 10.2 million. The country has a largely homogenous population with a dominant Christian tradition. However, primarily as a result of 40 years of Communist rule between 1948 and 1989, the vast majority of the citizens do not identify themselves as members of any organized religion. In a 2001 opinion poll, 38 percent of respondents claimed to believe in God, while 52 percent identified themselves as atheists. Nearly half of those responding agreed that churches were beneficial to society. There was a revival of interest in religion after the 1989 "Velvet Revolution;" however, the number of those professing religious beliefs or participating in organized religion has fallen steadily since in almost every region of the country.

v The city of Prague has awakened from a 40- year slumber behind the Iron Curtain. As if untouched by time, Lexia students can explore this 1,000 year-old capital just as it looked when Mozart, Kafka, Einstein and other members of the cultural and intellectual elite of Bohemia were drawn to the cafes, theaters, salons and studios that flourished among its elegant cobblestoned streets and gothic spires. But Prague today has also changed. After years under communist rule, the country's rapid transition to democratic capitalism has created some difficulties, including indifference to business corruption and exacerbated ethnic divisions, particularly between Czechs and the Roma, or Gypsies. In Prague, Lexia students have an opportunity to explore both the old and the new: the creative legacies of Bohemian society, the stagnation of communist culture, and the turbulent effects of democratic reform. Affiliated Institution:
Charles University

Lexia has been associated with Charles University since 1991. Founded in 1348, Charles University is Eastern Europe's oldest and most prestigious institution of higher learning, enrolling over 25,000 students a year. The faculty of the Lexia program is comprised primarily of Czech professors from Charles University. The faculty also serves as advisors for the Field Research Projects and offers a link to local Czech students. Lectures are also given by professors from other universities and speakers from industry and the government sector. Beyond the Nation-State:
