SVATAVA PIRKOVA JAKOBSON
Roman taught at Columbia, Harvard, and MIT, and Svatia was a lecturer in Czech language and literature at Harvard. She continued her work in folk music and collaborated with John Lomax and his son Alan, who was curator of the American Archive of American Folksong at the Library of Congress, where she occasionally served as a consultant. While in New York, she wrote a regular column for the Czech immigrant newspaper . In the late 1940's she served as editor-in-chief of the state department sponsored journal America It would not be an exaggeration to say that in Austin Svatia fell in love with the Czech Moravian communities of Texas, and with the Czech language and the need to teach it correctly, especially to young people of Czech ancestry who had grown up in Texas. She had strong feelings about these things, and about the local Czech newspapers that had come to life in Texas. Although she had no children of her own, she was known as the fierce and protective mother of young poets, musicians, and linguists.

It may be the potato soup, the traditional roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, the fruit filled dumplings, or the apple strudel. Czech cooking and eating habits have been shifting in the general direction of a healthier lifestyle, but traditional Czech recipes are still extremely popular - and those tend to be high in calories, fat and sugar. Sauces and condiments are popular. A Czech meal often starts with soup pol©vka ). Some popular Czech soups are:

  • Considering that this is a simple suburban hotel, the atmosphere feels surprisingly like a mountainside lodge, with lots of dark wood and numerous trophy animal horns displayed on the walls. Music, played at a discreet volume, features classics from Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker and Satchmo, a nice change from the common barrage of pop radio. Additionally, the service here rivals that of the best establishments in town: Bread is cut fresh at the sideboard once guests are seated; the polylingual waiters are attentive, professional and knowledgeable. erail@praguepost.com
