Cyprus' 'missing men' discussed
NICOSIA, Cyprus Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders are discussing the fate of more than 2,000 people who have disappeared since fighting began on the island in 1964. It is the first time the leaders have dedicated a whole meeting to the issue. President Glafcos Clerides, the Greek Cypriot leader, and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash agreed to tackle the long-festering issue in an effort to smooth the way for a new round of peace talks sponsored by the United Nations due to start next Wednesday. The two met for 40 minutes on Friday in the U.N. buffer zone on the island. A protest involving women dressed in black and holding photographs of their missing husbands and sons stood outside the conference building. MORE STORIES Turkey and Cyprus: A violent history Denktash said before the meeting: "We agreed to discuss the issue of the missing with good intentions, because there's pressure on Clerides, and we wanted to help out."

Exhibit curated by Helena Wylde Swiny Cyprus is a large, mountainous island in the eastern Mediterranean, 120 km west of Syria and 70 km south of Turkey. The heavily forested Troodos massif in the southwest and the Kyrenia range along the north coast flank the rolling central Mesaoria plain. Elsewhere, hills partition the island into winding river valleys and narrow coastal plains. The Troodos foothills are rich in copper, and in antiquity Cyprus gave its name to the metal. The abundance of copper, the diverse yet compact landscape, and the proximity of Syro-Anatolia directly affected patterns of human settlement on Cyprus and, thus, its archaeology. In 1865, General Luigi de Palma Cesnola, a naturalized Italian American, became the United States' consul to Cyprus, and while there, he began to acquire antiquities. While Cesnola's excavations on the island in the 1860-70s were, frankly, treasure hunts, he did draw attention to the rich antiquity of the land. When he left Cyprus, he took with him thousands of objects, which formed part of the original collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. In 1995, the Semitic Museum acquired, in a three-way exchange with the Stanford University Museums and the Harvard University Art Museums, a portion of the famous Cesnola collection which Stanford had purchased from the Met. The Semitic Museum's collection comprises over 1300 ceramic vessels, lamps, figurines, stone, glass, and metal objects from Cyprus, dating from ca. 2300 BCE to 700 CE. This exhibit at the Semitic Museum features selected pieces from the collection, along with other Cypriot artifacts from the Peabody Museum of Harvard University, the Museum of Fine Arts-Boston and the State University of New York in Albany.

Contact us Call it Leadwort, Sky Flower or Plumbago capensis. It's the Plant of the Month At last temperatures are beginning to drop a little and the first of the autumn Coptic winds occur around 27 th September. There might even be a thunderstorm to water the garden and wash off some of the dust that seems to have been around for months. More and more people enjoy gardening and find it a relaxing and enjoyable pastime. Gardening here in Cyprus is quite different from anywhere else in the Mediterranean area as we are high on summer temperatures and low on rainfall, which makes it difficult sometimes to know just what to grow where. My name is Patricia Jordan. I have lived and gardened in various parts of the world and want to share my gardening experiences with you. I live in Mosfiloti, northwest of Larnaca where I have fruit trees, vegetables, a lavender par terre, a perfumed garden and a desert garden and grow vegetables and herbs, which test all my gardening skills. These web pages are designed to help you make the most of your patch or patio in these difficult weather conditions. They are changed every month to reflect the current state of the garden and to give you up-to-date information about new plants, what's in bloom now and how to plant and prune. Book mark this page now!

Cyprus braced for more violence
British troops and riot police clashed with the protesters NICOSIA, Cyprus Violence at a British air base on Cyprus has been condemned by officials on the Mediterranean island, who are bracing for a second protest. Protesters clashed with riot police on Tuesday at the RAF Akrotiri air base over the construction of radio masts suspected of being a health risk. "The violence was completely unacceptable," UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told BBC radio. More protests by local residents were due to start at 5:00 p.m. (1400 GMT) on Wednesday close to the site where Britain plans to construct the antennae by 2003. At least 31 people were injured in the overnight clashes, which broke out after the arrest of Cypriot MP Marios Matsakis who tried to break into Britain's largest overseas air force base. The damage to British military facilities was estimated at between $294,000 and $441,000, Reuters reported.

Cyprus
An island in the Eastern Mediterranean, at the entrance of the Gulf of Alexandretta. It was originally inhabited by Phoenicians and Greeks, and was famous for its temples of Aphrodite. Though long autonomous, in the sixth century B.C. dominion over it was disputed by the Egyptians and the Persians, the latter ruling it till the invasion of Alexander the Great. From the Ptolemies of Egypt it passed to the Romans (59 B.C.). Despite Moslem invasions from the seventh to the tenth century, it remained a part of the Eastern Empire until the end of the twelfth. ln 1191 it was conquered by Richard the Lion-Hearted, who gave it to Guy de Lusignan, King of Jerusalem; in 1373 it fell to the Genoese, in 1489 to the Venetians. Finally, in 1571, it became Moslem territory under Sultan Selim II. In 1878 it was occupied by England and is now administered by an English high commissioner, assisted by a board of four English members (Statesman's Year Book, London, 1908). The island is hilly, with few rivers, and the climate is hot. Its once famous cities have perished; the chief towns are now Larnaca (the best port), Nicosia, and Limasol. Its area is 153,584 square miles. The population in 1901 was 237,000 (51,000 Mussulmans , 1100 Maronites, 850 Latins, 300 Armenians, a few Protestants and Jews, and the rest Greeks). It produces dates, carobs, oranges and other fruits, oil, wine, and corn. It has also sponge fisheries. Gypsum is mined there and copper mines were worked in ancient times.
