Cyprus Government Cyprus government is very interesting. According to the Cyprus constitution, governing is to be shared by Turkish and Greek residents. The Vice-President must be Turkish and elected by a Turkish party, while the President of Cyprus must be Greek and elected by Greek citizens. A Turkish invasion in 1974 caused a separation in the Cyprus government. In this invasion the Turkish made a separate government, but the Cypriot government is still controlled by the Greeks.

    Cyprus Government Welcomes EU Decision
    on Accession Negotiations
    July 17, 1997
President Glafcos Clerides has welcomed the European Commission reaffirmation that accession talks with Cyprus will start next year, and dismissed Turkish threats it will annex the occupied part of the island if the Republic joins the European Union (EU).
Describing Cyprus' EU accession process as "a catalyst towards a solution to the Cyprus problem", President Clerides said it would be preferable if a solution was reached before accession, stressing, however, this should not be a precondition.
Asked to comment on Turkey's threats to annex the occupied part of the island, if Cyprus joins the EU, President Clerides said the government has taken all necessary measures in the diplomatic field.
In Brussels, EU Commissioner, Mr. Hans Van Den Broek, has pointed out that the Commission cannot hold Cyprus hostage due to lack of cooperation by the Turkish side for a settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem.
Replying to a reporter's question soon after presenting the "Agenda 2000" before the European Parliament Wednesday, Mr. Van Den Broek reiterated that the EU decision to open accession negotiations with Cyprus was not new, but was taken in March 1995.

The Cyprus Government welcomes the appointment of Mr. Richard Holbrooke, the new US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus as a sign of American interest in solving the long-standing Cyprus problem. Mr. Richard Holbrooke's appointment was officially announced yesterday, 4 June, by the State Department Spokesman Mr. Nicholas Burns. Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides who is in Washington to meet with the US Secretary of State Mrs. Madeleine Albright on June 6, stated that "the appointment demonstrates the degree of the involvement of the US Government in the efforts that are about to begin to solve the Cyprus problem." The Foreign Minister noted that the appointment is indicative of the US special interest and that "it is sending a message to Turkey, that the USA means business." Meanwhile, the Government Spokesman in Nicosia Mr. Manolis Christophides expressed satisfaction with Mr. Holbrooke's appointment and underlined that the Cyprus Government is looking forward to a just settlement of the problem that would be in conformity with declarations and universal principles that both the U.N. and the U.S.A have committed themselves to uphold. Cyprus, a onetime Greek colony and the site of many military incursions over the centuries, is still today, an island in conflict between two opposing factions.
The southern part of this Mediterranean island ( the Greek Area ) is called the Republic of Cyprus, and is controlled by the officially recognized Cyprus government.
About one-third of Cyprus is occupied by Turkey, and they call it the Republic of Northern Cyprus. That claim is not recognized by the United Nations, or any other country.
Because of a Turkish invasion in 1974, the United Nation's established a buffer zone (colored gray), and that zone runs through the middle of the island, dissecting the capital city of Nicosia.
Even though Cyprus gained its independence from the UK in 1960, there remains two British sovereign bases on the island. (colored yellow)
Through it all, this ancient island remains a popular regional tourist destination, one famed for its sunny weather and fascinating history.

Cyprus Government Railways Industrial Archaeology The engine no.1 of the last train from Nicosia to Famagusta on 31st December 1951 now rests for display in Polat Pasha Boulevard in Famagusta In the figure above is a sketch of an old railway engine resting on a plinth, and placed here as a memorial to the Cyprus Government Railways (C.G.R.), which ran trains from Famagusta to Nicosia , and beyond to Güzelyurt (Morphou). The building behind the engine is the old Famagusta station which was the terminus of the C.G.R. There are many railway enthusiasts in Britain who worship these old engines as symbols of the past industrial revolution. There is now a division of antiquarians who study old engines, old mills, and the old machinery used one hundred years ago, the subject is Industrial Archeology.
In , the railway construction depot was inside the old walls, opposite the Othello Tower , and now occupied by Desdemona Gardens. In order to give access to the docks three archways were driven into the old Venetian curtain walls and the traces can be seen today. Great care was shown not to use stone for the railway construction from the walls and the ancient buildings although there were rumours that stone was going to be taken from Bellapais Abbey The railway was 37½ miles long, and there were stations at two mile intervals, the names being written in three languages, English, Greek, and Turkish. Speed was from 20 to 30 m.p.h. and the journey to Nicosia took about two hours. Two trains per day; the morning train left at 8:35 a.m. arriving at Nicosia at 10:37 a.m. If you wanted to continue to

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus is the sole internationally recognised authority in Cyprus but its authority, in practice, is exercised only in the southern part of the island which is predominantly Greek Cypriot. The northern part of Cyprus is controlled by the so-called 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' (TRNC) which is only recognised by Turkey. There is also an evident Turkish military presence in the north. A United Nations peacekeeping force (UNFICYP) patrols the buffer zone between the two areas. There have been occasional violent incidents along the the UN Buffer Zone ('The Green Line').

A spontaneous unification process may have been started on the island of Cyprus, now divided for 29 years, since Rauf Denktas, the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus—who had previously been unable to reach an agreement with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos on unification of the island—opened the Green Line separating the island’s two sections. Actually, it was the foot of Cypriot woman Marula Mihaili that first planted itself across the border, when last Wednesday [April 23], after 29 years of exile, she visited her childhood home in the town of Yerolakos, which is in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, an entity recognized solely by Ankara. The widow, now 75 years old, found almost everything as it had been left on July 20, 1974, when she was forced to leave it a few hours after the Turkish takeover. The Turkish family that occupied the house still uses the silver set that Mihaili received as a wedding gift and the abandoned and now somewhat worn furniture. Her grandfather’s cuckoo clock is still hanging on the wall. “I was surprised to see that they kept the family pictures,” she said happily to the Nicosia correspondent of the London paper
