of Cyprus Background:
Cypriot culture is among the oldest in the Mediterranean. The island fell successively under Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, Greek, and Roman domination. For 800 years, beginning in 364 AD, Cyprus was ruled by Byzantium. In 1571, the island was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and was ceded to Great Britain in 1878. Annexed formally by the United Kingdom in 1914 it became a crown colony in 1925. British rule lasted until August 1960 when, after a four-year liberation struggle, the island became independent and was proclaimed a Republic. In 1974, a coup was staged in Cyprus by the Greek-military junta to seize the government of the President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, answered by a military intervention from Turkey in which the Turkish troops soon controlled about 37% of the island. 40% of the total Greek Cypriot population, were forced to leave their homes in the occupied area.

Go to the old myEUROPE Web site Home Practice Teaching ideas Cyprus and Spai... Cyprus and Spain in a culture box This is another Web-based classroom project, which was running under Together in Europe. The project was carried out by pupils of Class 6 in Nareg School, Nicosia, Cyprus, and 12-13 years old in IES El Calamot, Gava (Barcelona), Spain, between March and June 2004. Culture in a Box " framework created by another Spring teacher, Theresa Giakoumatou, from Greece. They were really happy to get mail from such a faraway country! In the first picture you can see my learners holding the material our Cypriot friends had sent to us. In the second image there is an example of what Cypriot kids taught my students. They read The Culture in a box information about Cyprus in class, as a whole class activity, and made two posters:

Our questions about Cyprus The Spanish students then sent all the sentences they had written to their Cypriot friends, again by snail mail. Nora's pupils answered, and sent questions as well, which unfortunately were unanswered because it was the end of the school year by then.

  • On July 16, 2002, the U.S. and Cyprus signed a Memorandum of Understanding to protect certain categories of Pre-Classical and Classical archaeological material from Cyprus. As of July 19, 2002, these materials may not enter the U.S. unless such material is accompanied by an export permit issued by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. Ambassador Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis and Ambassador B. Lynn Pascoe, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, after the signing of the MOU.
II. Background
The bilateral agreement is in response to a request from the Government of the Republic of Cyprus seeking protection of its cultural heritage under Article 9 of the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. Cyprus was the first country in the Mediterranean region to seek the help of the United States in protecting its cultural property.

The name Cyprus has a somewhat uncertain etymology . One possible suggestion is that it comes from the Greek word "κυπάρισσος ( kypa'rissos )" meaning "cypress tree"; however it is more likely to stem from some non-IndoEuropean word for copper, most probably from the Sumerian "kabar" (copper), due to the large deposits of copper ore found on the island. Through overseas trade, the island has already given its name to the Classical Latin word for the metal, which appears in the phrase aes Cyprium , "metal of Cyprus", later shortened to

I t now looks as though Michel van Rijn will not give evidence in the case of Aydin Dikmen. Van Rijn was the Dutch art dealer who masterminded the 'sting' in October 1997 which led to the arrest of Dikmen, a Turkish dealer living in Munich, and the recovery of several frescoes, mosaics and icons looted from churches in Cyprus after the invasion of the Turks in 1974. Van Rijn is currently living under police protection at an undisclosed address in London, and has reportedly received death threats from unspecified sources, but he has settled his differences with the Republic of Cyprus and the Autocephalous Church of Cyprus over the fee he had charged for his part of the recovery. For obvious reasons van Rijn is not anxious to give evidence against the Turk who, if convicted, faces up to fifteen years in prison. However, van Rijn has made available to the Cypriot authorities (who are seeking the extradition of Dikmen to Cyprus, where he will face additional charges) a fake mosaic of St Andreas which van Rijn says Dikmen sold to him. Van Rijn had been holding this back as a bargaining ploy with the Cypriot authorities, because under German law the sale of fake goods is a very serious but quite separate offence from handling stolen material. This means that, in theory at least, Dikmen faces an even longer sentence if found guilty. The existence of the fake St Andreas also implies that the real mosaic is still missing. The Cypriots are being kept guessing as to whether the real version is still owned by Dikmen or is in van Rijn's possession. Either way, it appears that although three addresses belonging to Dikmen have already yielded 50-60 crates of material, containing 139 icons, 61 frescoes and four mosaics, valued at around $40 million, still more material could come to light, given the right circumstances. (An estimated 15,000-20,000 icons and several dozen frescoes and mosaics disappeared after the invasion).

One Nation, Invisible
What happens after ethnic cleansing ends? Bruce Sterling reports from the postnationalist future - Cyprus, haven of undeclared peace.
At the death of the 20th century, it's open season on Muslim ethnics. The Milosevic regime and its war-criminal militias are throwing a pogrom. They shoot and shell Muslims, "disappear" their leaders, rape the women, set fire to the crops, bulldoze the villages, and chase the locals over the borders, wholesale. Those who resist and refuse get thrown into mass graves. These recent dire events in Kosovo mirror what happened in Cyprus - 25 long years ago. There, the bitter, endless rivalry of two quarreling parent states, Greece and Turkey, gave rise to vengeful ethnic militias who burned villages and uprooted thousands of civilians. Air strikes followed, UN ground troops tried to restore peace, barbed wire flew up, land mines speckled the landscape, and journalists collected ghastly atrocity photos. Then, finally, the undeclared war stopped.
