Home of the Gods
The Olympian gods: Zeus, Apollo, Poseidon, Dionysos, Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, Artemis and Demeter, other lesser gods and heros, such as Asclepios, Persephone, Heracles, Leto and the Nymphs established themselves in Cyprus. The gods felt comfortably at home here, having found another mountain of Olympian heights, and settled on the highest peak of the troodos mountains.
Geologists say that the rocks of Cyprus were created during the Cretaceous period, which means they are 150 million years old.

You can find it all over Turkey and North Cyprus: women use it as bracelets, earrings or necklaces; Turkish people use it hung in their house, office and their car, also babies have it hung in their cloths. It should be mainly blue and look like an eye. There are very different sizes but the shape is usually round. The Turkish name for this amulet that protects one from the evil eye is nazar boncuk.
But what is behind this turkish superstition? Once upon a time there was a rock by the sea that even with the force of a hundred men and a lot of dynamite couldn't be moved or cracked. There was also a man in this town by the sea, who was known to carry the evil eye (Nazar). After much effort and endeavor, the town people brought the man to the rock, and the man, upon looking at the rock said, "My God ! What a big rock !" The instant he said it, there was a rip, roar and crack, and instantly the immense and impossible rock was found to be cracked in two.

WELCOME TO JOHN A. STAVOLA'S HOMEPAGE OF SOUTHERN ITALIAN HISTORY , CULTURE, AND GENEALOGY
DUE SICILIE WHY SOUTHERN ITALY? The regions of Puglia and Campania, located in the southern half of the peninsula known as Italy, are where my
ancestors originated from. Before it's annexation by northern Italy it was an
independent country known as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Ruled by the Royal House of Bourbon, from the city of Naples ,this kingdom was
also comprised of the island of Sicily, and the regions of Calabria, Basilicata,
Abruzzi, and Molise. Separated by mountain and seabarriers ,differences
in custom and dialect developed which made this area distinct from the north. Indeed ,these barriers also created distinctions from region to region.
The differences between the southern half of the peninsula and the northern
half are now making themselves more prominent due to separatist movements in the north and now in the south. In time culturally
and politically independent states will reemerge in a federated Europe.

Cyprus culture With a history spanning some nine thousand years, a fascinating mixture of civilizations have each stamped their culture and shaped the character of the Island. The towns of Cyprus present a blend of modern, historic buildings and ancient monuments. Colonial and classic style buildings are juxtaposed with contemporary hotels, and apartment blocks. Attractive shopping streets, some narrow and quaint, others modern tantalise the taste buds with both old and new. In contrast, life in the villages is slower paced, reflecting the importance of agriculture, cottage industry and family ties. Traditional flat-roofed houses made of mud-brick are commonplace, while stone-built houses with tiled roofs can be seen in the mountain regions. Many village homes, feature delightful vine-leafed courtyards and typically, clay ovens are built directly into the walls. People The people of Cyprus are traditionally warm and welcoming. Although the official language is Greek, English is readily spoken everywhere. Even in remote villages someone will usually be able to speak a bit of English.

The people of Cyprus are traditionally warm and welcoming and consider a visit to their island as a compliment - one that is repaid with genuine hospitality, summed up in the Greek word Philoxenia: Friendship towards the guest. Their native language is Greek, but English is readily spoken in all the shops, restaurants and hotels - in fact just about everywhere. In a world of ever-increasing violence, Cyprus has a remarkably low crime rate, and from just one visit to the Island the visitor can understand why. The pace is leisurely, the people kind and helpful, always ready with a smile. The Cypriots are hard workers too - resilient people who have withstood and accommodated the succession of invaders throughout their long history.
Town and Village Life
The towns of Cyprus present a modern cosmopolitan atmosphere blended with historic buildings and ancient monuments. Imposing colonial and classic style buildings rub shoulders with well-designed contemporary hotels, apartment blocks and attractive shopping streets, some narrow and quaint, others thoroughly modern. By contrast, life in the villages follows a slower pace, reflecting the importance of agriculture, cottage industry and family ties. Traditional flat roofed village houses made of mud brick are a common sight, while stone-built dwellings with tiled roofs can be seen in the mountains. Many village houses feature delightful vine-shaded courtyards and the typical local oven "fourno" for homemade baking.

    Cyprus History and Culture
History According to archaeological investigation and conjecture, the aboriginal inhabitants of Cyprus were Indo-European people who had a written language. Extensive excavation has shown that during the Neolithic and Bronze ages the Cypriots had an advanced civilization. Culture Examples of Cypriot folk art, which is an outgrowth of traditional Greek art, are in the Folk Art Museum (1950) in Nicosia. The Cyprus Museum (1883) at Nicosia houses many archaeological artifacts found on the island. Museums in Paphos, Larnaca, and Lemesós display other important collections.
