In November 1983, the Turkish part of the island proclaimed itself the Kuzey Kibris Turk Cumhuriyeti Kiprikai Demokratika ) is the Greek-Cypriot administration in Nicosia. Until February 2003, this had been led for a decade by President Glafkos Clerides. That month, he was deposed at the most recent presidential election by Tassos Papadopoulos, candidate of the center-right Komma Dimokratika
Government
The 1960 constitution, which allowed for a population-determined sharing of power between the Turkish and Greek communities, officially remains in force. However, in practice, the state organs that it established are duplicated in the two zones. Thus executive power in the Republic of Cyprus is vested in a President, elected by universal adult suffrage every five years. He is assisted by a Council of Ministers. A 56-seat parliament ( Vouli Antiprosopon Temsilciler Mecsili ) has 50 members elected by proportional representation to serve a five-year term. The executive President is also elected for a five-year term.

All three European Parliament's opinion giving committees (not the legal committee) voted on their reports on 23-24 September. Due to EBLIDA's, the national library associations' and EFPICC's strong lobby in writing and by individual meetings with MEPs during the last weeks and months, most of our suggested amendments were adopted in at least one of the committees' final texts: Recital 22: EBLIDA's request that the Directive should not be limited to an exhaustive list of exceptions was taken up by the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (EMAC), in their report it is changed to "non-exhaustive list of exceptions". The Consumer Committee's text replaces the Commission's wording on "exhaustive enumeration of exceptions" by a "mandatory list of exceptions".

http://www.cyprusexplorer.com/
Welcome to Cyprus
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and is located in the northeastern area of the Mediterranean Sea.
With a population of only 700 000, large areas of the island remain completely unspoiled.
However, as a result of the Turkish invasion of 1974, 37% of the island remains under Turkish rule. The so-called 'Green Line' border that cuts directly through the capital, Nicosia divides the country, now the last remaining divided capital in Europe.
Cyprus is an island steeped in history and has a rich cultural heritage. Visitors and tourists that travel to Cyprus have an overwhelming choice of ancient monuments and archaeological sites to visit. This is particularly so in Paphos, which has been included in UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage sites.
The majority of the population is Greek Cypriot, and they follow the Christian Orthodox religion. The main language spoken is Greek but English is widely spoken, along with German, in the tourist areas.
The unit of currency is the Cyprus pound (current value US$ 0.60) and all major credit cards are accepted. If you like our website, please rate it at
