Olympic cycling has three distinct categories: "road racing," "track racing," and "mountain biking." Track events occur on steeply banked tracks called "velodromes." Road racing is racing on paved roadways. Mountain bike racing takes place off-road. Click a link to

The Races
In time trials, competitors race against the clock to record the fastest time. In this all-out race, a cyclist is said to have "hit the wall" when his or her legs can no longer pedal at a rapid pace. Road races are mass start events that take place on public roads. Endurance is the main factor in road racing. Riding in the "slipstream," the current of air created by the leader, decreases wind resistance and can cut a cyclist's effort by as much as 20 percent. This is also called "drafting" and can be utilized in all cycling events.

The International Olympic Committee(IOC) said on Monday that their executive board has approved the men's and women's BMX cycling events to be put in the program of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing
IOC President Jacques Rogge told reporters that the BMX or bikemoto-cross, will be added to the Beijing Games while the total number of athletes for cycling will remain unchanged.
This requires that two other cycling existing events be droppedto make room for BMX but Rogge said that the International CyclingFederation had yet to decide which would be dropped.
Despite the change in the cycling sport, Rogge said that the total number of events for Beijing Games will remain as usual at 300.
Rogge also said that the IOC is still at the stage of defining the criteria to decide which sports remain inside or outside the Olympic program.

OU puts flimsy penalty into practice, when star should be missing game
It is not surprising that Adrian Peterson will be allowed to try to score touchdowns for Oklahoma today despite having missed several classes without permission. Oklahoma runs one of our country's big-time college athletic programs, just like UCLA, which it meets today. Its football team is one of those with a vision of a multimillion-dollar bowl payday dancing in its head. It can't afford to have its best player be a mere spectator any more than any other major college athletic program with a multimillion-dollar budget. Ridiculous act of hazing is spreading

T he British Cycling Federation (BCF) trades as British Cycling, and is the internationally recognised governing body of cycle sport in the United Kingdom. Over the last four years BC has successfully sought funding for major new initiatives in Youth Development, Coach Education and World Class Athlete training. A network of Youth development officers and World Class Start Talent Managers and Coaches are delivering activities, advice and support to children, volunteers and clubs throughout England. A new generation of coaches are being trained to take cycling forward to new levels of attainment. Lottery funding is providing our top riders with a unique opportunity to train and prepare as full-time athletes. Olympic medals, the highest goals of sport, were the rewards for two year’s outstanding effort and commitment. With the Commonwealth Games successfully hosted by the BC’s home city of Manchester in 2002 and the next Olympics in 2004, cycling looks set to continue its upward curve for years to come.

Eastway Users Group is to meet at Eastway on Tuesday 26 July at 7pm for 7-30 to discuss the options for cycle sport on the site and elsewhere after the IOC announcement.
BC, LVRPA and the LDA are the nominated partners on the Olympic cycle disciplines. They are to determine jointly what proposals are made to users for cycle sport to sustain after Eastway closes, probably in 2007. It is understood that a site has been identified. Eastway Users Group is having to await information on what it is and where, despite having been promised this information back in May.
Users are realistic enough to know that the present facility is ideal for sport to thrive, so any alternative site will have to be really good for it not to be grossly inferior. Eastway Users Group has secured planning conditions which entail users knowing two years in advance of any demolition what the interim and legacy facilities are to be. It is probable that users would be vociferous if unacceptable interim facilities are proposed.
The Olympic bid went unopposed by the people who actually do cycle sport on the site. This was based upon a recognition of the need for regeneration and on assurances made by the development partners relating to the interim and legacy provision for road and off-road riding.
