COMPETITION Sports Competition Sports by Season Spring Sports Summer Sports ... Sports Development Cycling is an exciting sport that tones muscles and strengthens the cardiovascular system. It is also an enjoyable recreational activity that offers fun and relaxation and provides an inexpensive form of transportation. Cycling was inaugurated at the 1987 Special Olympics World Games while it was still considered a demonstration sport. Twenty-one athletes participated and proved their skill and ability. One year later, cycling was adopted as an official Special Olympics sport. Today, approximately 5,285 athletes from 59 Special Olympics Programs around the globe participate in cycling. Events offered range from the 500M Time Trial to 10K Time Trials to the 5K Road Race to the 40K Road Race. WORLD GAMES HISTORY
At the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games in North Carolina, USA, 160 athletes from 23 countries competed in cycling. HIGHLIGHTS
Ten Special Olympics athletes spent a day at the White House in August 2001 where three-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was the guest of honor of President George W. Bush. In the East Room of the White House, Bush honored 29-year-old Armstrong, who overcame testicular cancer to win the bicycle race three times in a row. Bush praised Armstrong for successfully battling cancer, then going on to win what he said was perhaps the most physically demanding event in sports. Bush pointed to Armstrong as an example of how to confront challenges.

The belligerence of 1908 was replaced with benevolence four years later, as Sweden provided a well-organized and pleasant haven for the troubled Games. And then there were Jim Thorpe and Hannes Kolehmainen. Ralph Craig of the U.S. was the only other winner of two individual track gold medals, taking both the 100 and 200-meter runs. The 100 final had seven false starts, one with Craig sprinting the entire distance before being called back. Although Thorpe returned to the U.S. a hero, a year later it was learned that he had played semi-pro baseball for $25 a week in 1909 and 1910. The IOC, with the full support of the American Olympic Committee, stripped him of his medals and erased his records.

At the begining of 1948, having been used as a wartime barrage balloon site, the Velodrome was cracked and covered with weeds - a new bitumen surfaced track was constructed, funded by a private donation. The entrances used for the games are no longer in use, but today's regeneration plans will re-open them.
At these games all hopes were pinned on Britain's four times world sprint champion Reg Harris (above right) but the Italian rider Mario Ghella (above left) beat him to second place.
As a London Olympic heritage venue, Herne Hill will play a role in the London 2012 Bid . Olympic cycling is now held on a shorter, steeper indoor track, but Herne Hill Velodrome will still play a vital Olympic bid supporting role as a key regional development and training venue for cycling.

Tyler Hamilton has been accused of testing positive for blood doping, but he denies it.
COMMENTARY Jim Litke Associated Press columnist Another sweet sports story turned sour with the news that Olympic cycling champion Tyler Hamilton tested positive for blood doping. Because it almost doesn't matter what happens from here on out. Cycling insiders will tell you the 33-year-old American was the nicest guy in racing, one of the most deserving, and the last one they thought would get busted. Cynics, meanwhile, simply wink at the notion that anybody that good in such a dirty racket could be clean. In the past, Hamilton stood up for the rest of his sport. Those words used to carry a lot of weight. This time he was speaking for himself. The sad part is that nobody gets the benefit of the doubt anymore. "I am 100 percent innocent," he said Tuesday while awaiting the results of backup tests. "I worked hard for that gold medal, and it isn't going anywhere."

Thoughts from the bike: on publishing and women's sports
I wore my 1999 Women’s World Cup tshirt while cycling this morning, and it reminded me of one reason we decided to start publishing independently: speed. I got the tshirt when we attended a World Cup game at Foxborough stadium, on a blazing summer’s day in 1999. We were then putting final touches on the , published by Macmilllan. As you’ll see from the extract below, this event presented a special opportunity to talk to women athletes from around the world. When we got to our hotel at midnight, the teams were there, so after picking up an autograph or two I spent an hour running around trying to interview someone from the North Korean team because we really wanted to fill in the sketchy information we had about women’s sports in that country. But the encyclopedia wasn’t published till -—and it had no update for the 2000 Olympic Games! This was done on big-box publisher time, not on a Berkshire schedule, which goes from start to finish in under two years. From the point we were at when we watched the World Cup would have been no more than two months to press. Today, I'm happy to say, we get articles out faster, often, than academic journals do, to the amazement and pleasure of our authors. This speed keeps costs down and is good for libraries because their patrons get fresh, accurate information.

Golden Laurels / Baron Eduard von Falz-Fein Baron Eduard von Falz-Fein For many years, Baron Eduard von Falz-Fein was a "sports diplomat" who established and cultivated many diverse international relationships for Liechtenstein sports. He rendered particularly outstanding services for the Olympic movement in Liechtenstein. Using his professional and family ties to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), he was the driving force when Liechtenstein, which was not a member of the IOC, participated in the Olympic Games for the first time. An Olympic Committee was founded in Liechtenstein a year before in 1935, where Baron von Falz-Fein served as Vice President.
According to Eduard von Falz-Fein, the results were modest the first few times Liechtenstein participated in the Olympics, but he always believed that even a small country could achieve success through hard work and luck. Today we know that his perseverance has proven to be correct: The gold, silver, and bronze medals that Liechtenstein has won at the Olympics demonstrate this. Baron von Falz-Fein has always been particularly committed to the Olympic movement and idea: "Taking part is everything!" This is underscored in a most impressive way by the fact that he participated in 16 Olympic Games in various functions!
