Olympics briefs
By Compiled from Times wires Terrorist threat downplayed SYDNEY, Australia Officials reassured the world Saturday that next month's Olympics are safe from terrorist attack after a possible plot against the country's only nuclear reactor was exposed. In the first major security scare for the Games, New Zealand police in March discovered evidence of a possible plan to attack the reactor, in suburban Sydney. The information was found during an operation in Auckland against a suspected organized crime ring with links to Afghanistan. Australian officials were quick to say there was no direct evidence of a terrorist threat. New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff also downplayed any threat: "There is nothing that suggests there is a threat on the ground other than somebody had marked the reactor and access to it in a notebook." The Australians expressed confidence in the Games' massive security operation, headed by the New South Wales state police and including Australian military forces and international intelligence services. International Olympic Committee chairman Juan Antonio Samaranch said he was not worried.

Road Races:
The men's race is over 17 laps of 13km, a total distance of 221km. The women's race is over 8 laps of 104km. Both feature a mass start with cyclists completing a number of circuits of the course. In both the women's and the men's event, the first cyclist over the line wins.
Individual Time Trial
Cyclists start from a ramp at intervals of 60 seconds and race against the clock with the fastest cyclist winning.
1,000m Sprint
For this event riders need both explosive speed and skill. Lots are drawn for each race and the rider who draws the inside of the track at the start must lead for the first lap. Riders neither want to take the lead nor leave themselves open to attack from behind, which means they often to come to a standstill. Riders must not roll backwards more than 20cm. In the last lap, one rider will normally make a sprint to give a dramatic finish.

olympics: Triumphant result for transsexuals
Stephen Hui, CUP National Bureau Chief "It's about time," Michelle Dumaresq said of the Olympic committee's decision to allow transsexual athletes to compete in their self-identified gender. Dumaresq, 33, broke new ground for transsexual athletes in 2001 by asserting her right to race as a woman. Now the post-operative male-to-female transsexual from Vancouver is the Canadian national champion in the women's downhill mountain biking discipline. While the International Olympic Committee's new rules won't apply to her - since downhill is not yet an Olympic sport - Dumaresq says she's pleased that trans athletes hoping to participate in the Games will no longer face the barriers that have dogged her. Until recently, transsexual athletes were barred from competing in the Olympics. Then in May, the IOC's executive board approved a policy establishing the conditions under which athletes who have changed sex could participate in the Games. The new rules kicked in this summer in Athens, although no trans athletes competed there. "I think this clearly shows that we will always address issues on human rights. That's something that we find very important," said Charmaine Crooks, an Olympic silver medallist and Canadian IOC member living in Vancouver.

Playing is part of the family
    By Beth Orenstein
When it comes to sports, the Lehigh Valley has some real gems thanks to area families. One standout is Patriots Park on Wyoming Street on the south side of Allentown.
Referred to as "Pates" by locals, the park is where, from March until the last week in October, some of the best softball (men, women, high school, youth, church league, etc.) is played. League, district and state playoffs and national tournaments also are held here. Adults and kids have been 'playing ball' at Patriots park, above, in Allentown since 1953. Most of the parks in the Valley have a history of philanthropy behind them, including the Rodale fitness park in Trexlertown, built in honor of Bob Rodale. "We had 421 games last year," says Don Hunsicker , whose late father, Earl , was among the original charter members of the park officially dedicated on Aug. 30, 1953. "I don't think there is another park in the country, including in the major leagues, that would take that many games in a year's time."
While Earl Hunsicker was instrumental in founding Patriots Park and served as club treasurer for 25 years, Don is athletic director. Don's son

    TEAM USA Settles For Bronze
With their hopes of bring home the gold dashed, in the end Team USA had to settle for a Bronze medal in Athens. We at Gothamist have chosen to view this as a glass half full type of situation. Plenty of people will decry the state of US Basketball over the next few weeks (and with good reason), so instead, let’s look at the positives that came out of the 2004 games. First and foremost, we earned the Bronze medal. Hey, it could have been worse. We could have come in fourth. Keep in mind that the US beat both of the teams that won their division in pool play. Athens was the first time in Olympic basketball history that one of the two pool winners did not medal. Spain was undefeated when they tipped off against the US in the quarterfinals and we exacted revenge on Lithuania in the Bronze medal game, beating them soundly Also, the US finished in 6th place in the World Championships of 2002. In essence, we’ve improved three spots since then. This team could have given up and packed it in after their loss to Argentina (who went on to win the Gold), instead, they played their best game of the tournament in the Bronze medal game. They deserve credit for that. Lastly, credit the players that made the trip to Athens for wanting to represent their country in international play. Many NBA superstars stayed home for various reasons. The young men that elected to play represented our country in a very dignified way and we should all be proud of them for doing so.

Connie Paraskevin-Young makes things happen. Not just a spunky girl with strong legs who became a five-time Olympian in two sports, her strong will made her decide on an athletic career, and strong drive took her to the top—for over 20 years. With that decisiveness and a strategy, after competing as an Olympic speedskater and winning a World Championship medal, Paraskevin-Young opted to switch to track cycling—before it was a women’s Olympic sport. She competed against men and lobbied to add women’s sprint cycling to the 1988 Olympics—where she handily took the bronze medal. Need more inspiration? It was no easy ride to the top for Paraskevin-Young. She overcame health obstacles—injuries to her knees, hand and ankle and endured severe, debilitating headaches, toughing it out, continually achieving her personal best. Fierce in her efforts, Paraskevin-Young savors the victory of an all-out fight in a tough race over an easy win. Though competitive to the bone, she still has compassion, encouraging peers and competitors alike.
