Edgar puts down Beijing marker
William Fotheringham in Athens
Wednesday August 25, 2004
The Guardian

As one established British medal hope Chris Newton failed in dramatic fashion in the points race, another great prospect emerged in the stocky form of Ross Edgar, who rode into fifth place yesterday in the most prestigious event in the velodrome, the men's sprint. He is all of 21 years old and set out his stall for Beijing. Edgar, who has spent two years at the International Cycling Union's track school at L'Aigle in Switzerland, came to the Greek capital as a reserve "hoping to get a ride" and was selected for the sprint only because Craig Maclean was off form. He was eliminated in the second round, fought his way to the quarter-finals through the repechage, and yesterday won the final for the four losing quarter-finalists, leading for the last lap and a half.

Mark Keast examines why corporate Canada doesn't invest more in amateur sport By Mark Keast
It's a weekday night at a fancy downtown Toronto bar named, aptly, Shmooze if you're going to talk about corporate Canada and amateur athletics. Two gold medallists from the Athens Games are on hand. The one with the perma-smile and the shiny gold medal dangling around her neck is Edmonton's Lori-Ann Muenzer, now the best in the world in track cycling, who has stopped here on her way home to Edmonton for a party in her honour. Oakville's Adam van Koeverden is the other gold medallist, only van Koeverden isn't displaying his two medals, a bronze and a gold in kayaking. He's here to help another Olympian celebrate her achievement.

Demonstration showing two options for implementing Website accessibility guidelines in the menu of sports
By Tom Worthington
http://www.tomw.net.au/2000/sports.html The purpose of this document is to demonstrate methods for implementing Website accessibility guidelines for the Olympic games web site . Specifically methods to provide a text alternative for the menu of sports is shown.
Option 1: ALT Text on the existing image map
In this implementation, a ALT tag with the name of the sport is added to each rectangular region of the existing image map. As an example, alt="Archery" is added to the first area: < AREA shape="rect" coords="1,1,80,12" href=http://www.olympics.com/eng/sports/AR/home.html" alt="Archery" There is no change in the appearance of the menu for most users. However, the effect of including the ALT tags is that a browser can display the text labels in place of the graphics, if required:
Option 2: Simple text menu supplementing or replacing the existing image map
Simple hypertext links are used for the name of each sport: Archery These instructions could be used in a simple list of sports, or in a table as show below. The list has been changed to run alphabetically across the columns, rather than down, to aid braille readers (which read one line of horizontal text at a time). The colour of the table background and text can be changed to match that of the current graphic. However, those colours may be difficult for some people to read:

Competitive Sports In Spain and the 1992 Olympics.
The development of sports at a primary level of education, with the help of the State and the Autonomous Communities, has resulted in a spectacular advance in competitive sports in Spain. Even the fact that the 1992 Olympics were held in Spain and the medals were won by Spaniards demonstrate the recognition of this new sports' potential and the support it has been given. Spanish sports have produced such figures of international repute as Pedro Delgado and Miguel Indurain in cycling, Angel Niego in motorcycle racing, Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya in motor car rallies, the Sanchez Vicario family and Sergi Bruguera in tennis, Severiano Ballestero in golf, etc. The enumeration would be incomplete if we failed to mention Spain's presence in the many international competitions. Athletism motor racing, basketball, handball, billards, cycling, aerial sports, winter sports, water skiiing, football, gymnastics, hoseback riding, karate, motorcycle racing, motor boat racing, jai alai, swimming, fishing, canoeing, rowing, tae-kwon-do, tennis, sailing, rifle shooting are some of the sports in which Spain stands out in the world championships. In October 1990, the Sports Law was pased which defined the characteristics of professional and amateur sports and established a legal framework for professional clubs.
