History of Fuji Bicycles
Beginning in 1899 Fuji has recorded an impressive number of technological firsts. In 2000, they recorded firsts again with the Fuji Team, the bike the Mercury Cycling Team rode to more US National Cup wins than any other team in the past three seasons. Fuji continues its tradition of innovation and value that is hard to beat.
Fuji's racing tradition continued, when in 1951 the first Asian games held in New Delhi and was won by a young Shoichiro Sugihara on a Fuji. During this period, Fuji was so popular throughout Asia that sales of Fuji bicycles were quickly expanded into other Asian markets. In 1964, the Olympics were held in Tokyo and Fuji’s chief engineer and world-renowned competitive bike designer Dr. Shoichiro Sugihara coached the Japanese national team. He also designed the bicycles that the team competed on. This is the same Shoichiro Sugihara that won the first international cycling competition on a Fuji. He repeated this role at both the 1968 Olympics in Mexico and the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Fuji’s place in bicycle history was assured.
In 1971, Fuji America was established on our shores. Those were days during which recognition for the innovation, efficiency and craftsmanship of Japanese manufacture was reserved to the connoisseur. It was just beginning to become apparent in the field of electronics and the automotive world. Our mission was clear-cut: earn the deserved admiration of what Japan's combination of modern technology and old world ideology could achieve. With one look, one ride, Fuji became one of the most respected brands in the U. S. Among Fuji’s breakthroughs in those early years was the utilization of double-butted Chrome Molybdenum frame sets on many popular-priced models.

The Summer Paralympic Games are the ultimate competition for world class elite athletes with a disability and as such are linked to the Olympic Celebration each quadrennium. The Paralympic Games, in terms of complexity, duration and the number of competitors, are second only to the Olympic Games.
The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that athletes with disabilities should have opportunities to pursue their goals in sport equivalent to those of non-disabled athletes. Athletes who compete in the Paralympics set their sights on the dream of winning a gold medal, are committed to strenuous training regimes and meet strict qualifying standards to be selected to their national team. The Paralympic Games represent a commitment to excellence that allows elite athletes to achieve their personal best. The Paralympic Games exemplify the Olympic ideal of participation and sportsmanship.

Archaeologists believe the ancient Olympic Games began more than 4,000 years ago in Olympia, a valley in Greece. Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude … well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.

Susan B. Anthony, suffragist, 1896
  • 776 B.C. - The first Olympics are held in ancient Greece. Women are excluded, so they compete every four years in their own Games of Hera, to honor the Greek goddess who ruled over women and the earth.
  • 396 B.C. - Kyniska, a Spartian princess, wins an Olympic chariot race, but is barred from collecting her prize in person.
  • 1406 - Dame Juliana Berners of Great Britain writes the first known essay on sports fishing. She described how to make a rod and flies, when to fish, and the many kinds of fishing in her essay, “Treatise of Fishing with an Angle.”
  • 1552 - Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87), an avid golfer, coins the term “caddy” by calling her assistants cadets. It is during her reign that the famous golf course at St. Andrews is built.
  • Sarah Kemble Knight (1666-1727) sets out alone on horseback from Boston to New Haven and later New York, keeping a diary of her travels, which was published in 1825 as The Journal of Madame Knight
  • 1722 - British fighter Elizabeth Wilkinson enters the boxing ring.

            Paul Newman
            Published: 26 August 2004
Like so many of the great performers, Bradley Wiggins left his best to the very last. The colour of the prize won by the 24-year-old Londoner alongside Rob Hayles in the madison track cycling event here yesterday may have been bronze, unlike his first two medals here, but the manner in which he rode into British Olympic history was the stuff of sporting legend. Having recovered from an early crash which sent Hayles and his bike flying across the boards, the Britons fought back to secure third place in the very last moments of the race. The U.S. has finished atop the medals table at three consecutive Olympics, and its total here beat both Sydney 2000 (97) and Atlanta 1996 (101) though the 36 golds here lagged behind Sydney (40) and Atlanta (44).
