Baron De Coubertin inspires the first modern Games
The first of the modern Olympic Games was staged in Athens, Greece, although financial difficulties almost saw it staged in Budapest, Hungary. Initially it was intended that Paris would host the first Olympics in 1900, but Athens was chosen four years earlier, though Greece ran into financial difficulties before the Games could begin. With Hungary preparing for its millennium celebrations, Budapest repeatedly offered to step in as a replacement but the Crown Prince Constantine of Greece set up an organising committee and the donations began to flood in. Just over 200 men, representing 14 countries competed in a total of 43 events. The majority of the participants were from the host nation with tennis, track and field, fencing, weightlifting, cycling, wrestling, shooting, swimming and gymnastics all contested. Cricket and soccer tournaments were cancelled due to a lack of participating teams while rowing and sailing competitions fell victim to poor weather. Event winners received a silver medal, a certificate and a crown of olive leaves. Runners-up were given bronze medals and a crown of laurel while third placed participants went home empty handed.

Olympic cycling is a high-tech affair Cycling has been a key part of the Olympics since the first modern Games in 1896.
It started with road and track events, with the first Olympic road race held over two laps of the marathon course. Frenchman Paul Masson was the star of the show in Athens, winning three of the six events - the one-kilometre time trial, 10km track race and 1,000m sprint. It was 100 years before mountain biking joined the party in Atlanta, and the introduction of several more weird and wonderful track events in Sydney took the number of different two-wheel disciplines to 11. The advance of technology over the past century has seen bikes evolve into space-age speed machines. The spokeless, carbon-fibre disc wheel was seen for the first time at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Chronology of the Growth of Bicycling
by David Mozer Note: Michael Angelo is credit with drawing the first diagrams of a bicycle. The answer to the question of who fabricated the first bike depends upon who you ask; the French claim it was a Frenchman and Americans often claim that it was an American. Date Development Giovanni Fontana built the first human powered land vehicle it had four wheels and used an endless rope connected via gears to the wheels. Scientist, inventor, artist, Leonardo da Vinci sketched a primitive version of a bicycle. Comte de Sicrac built a hobby horse bike - a hobby horse with two wheels instead of a rocker. Hobby Horse Bicycle: Two wheels the same size added to essentially a modified hobby horse. The alignment of the front wheel is fixed. The are no peddles so the bike propelled by pushing off with your feet and the bike was steered by leaning. It was made entirely of wood. A model, invented by Baron von Drais, also known as a Draisienne and "dandy horse", had a steer-able front wheel. This enjoyed a short lived popularity as a fad, not being practical for transportation in any other place than a well maintained pathway such as in a park or garden.
Kirkpatric Mcmillan, a Scottish blacksmith adapted a treadle-type pedals to a bicycle..

Olympics History Origin Of Modern Olympic Games Inflaming the inspiration and enthusiasm from the Ancient Olympic Games , which were conducted every four years between 776 BC and 393 AD in Olympia, Greece until forbidden by Emperor of Greece in 393 AD, the Modern Olympic Games were started in 1896 at Athens, Greece under the initiation and leadership of a French educationalist Baron Pierre de Coubertin. DISCIPLINES Archery: Like so many other sports Archery is a game of Egyption origin. It originated probably in the pre-historic period through primitive men, who used it either for self - defence or for food by killing animals. In the later centuries men used bows. Ancient Hindu Epics, tell of the heroic wars where Lord Rama and Arjuna, to quote a few, played important roles in the field of Archer which gradually turned into a discipline in the Modern Olympics. Although Archery featured in the Modern Olympics in 1900 at Paris, 1904 at St. Luis, 1908 at London and 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, it was discontinued till the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

The rebirth of the Games
The first Session of the IOC was held in Paris on 23-24 June 1894. It was during the first Session that the city of Athens was selected for the Games of the I Olympiad. The inauguration of the first Games of the modern era, opened by King George I at the foot of the Acropolis on April 5, 1896, was a huge relief for baron Pierre de Coubertin. Greece's instability and economic stature, due to numerous conflicts, proved almost insurmountable obstacles. However, a wealthy Greek architect from Alexandria, George Averoff, donated a gift of one million drachma and in a matter of 18 months a superb white marble stadium, able to hold 60,000 people, was constructed. Many of the events, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, were held in a reconstructed Panathinaiko Stadium, which was originally built in 330 B.C. Baron de Coubertin's dream of reinventing the Games was one he had coveted since 1892 - two years later the official announcement was made and Athens chosen as the site. Baron Pierre de Coubertin invited countries from all over the world to attend the first of the new Olympics in Athens.
