This is an archive copy of a document originally located at http://www.activeaustralia.org/women/olym_hist.htm Women in the Olympics - a brief history The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

Information Sheet - History of Cycling The bicycle has undergone many changes over the past 200 years. These changes have not only been in the design, but also the materials that have been used to make them. The first bike of sorts was made in Paris around 1790. It was wooden, and actually required the rider to 'walk' it as it had no pedals! Within a short time, many kinds of bikes with lots of unusual bits and pieces were designed. Some of these were rather weird and had a very short life. However, as better technology and materials were discovered, others developed over time into what we ride today. c1870 - The Velocipede or 'man-powered vehicle', known as the boneshaker. Wheels were made from wood but the frame from wrought iron. Brakes were a block of wood mounted on an iron bed. Pressure was placed on the back wheel when a cord was shortened by twisting the handle bars. Pedals were fitted to the hub of the front wheel which was slightly larger than the back wheel and was fitted with brass bearings so that it could turn from side to side. The saddle was on a spring which stretched from the steering column and fitted to the back wheel with a bolt. A mounting step was placed on one side to help the rider get on. This bike required a lot of leg muscle. c1880 - The Penny Farthing A lot of skill was needed to get on and off this machine. A jagged mounting step was added later to assist. The brake worked by twisting the front handle bars which tightened a cord and applied a metal stop to the back wheel. The front wheel was larger so more ground was covered in one revolution, - one turn of the pedal gave two turns of the wheel The diameter of the front wheel ranged up to 150cm. The back wheel small to reduce weight. The bike weighed around 12kg. Metal was used for its construction.

The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

Spain had registered more than 4000 participants. France sent a fairly large troop. Some other participating nations were the US, England, Holland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Algeria.
