    History
    The first bicycle was built in 1790 by a French aristocrat, Count Sivrac. It was made of wood and had no steering wheel or pedal. Forward motion was possible only by thrusting one’s feet towards the ground, one after the other. In 1817, the German aristocrat Baron von Drais introduced the concept of turning the front wheel in different directions. In 1861 the motive power was invented by Pierre Michaux, and later perfected by an Englishman, J. K. Stanley. In 1887 an Irishman, John Boyd Dunlop, invented the inner tube, which was later refined by Edouard and Andre Michelin. The first bicycle race took place in 1868 in Paris. The first World Championship was held in 1895. The original two cycling disciplines – Road race and Track cycling – were included in the first Olympic Games of modern times in Athens in 1896. A Greek athlete, Aristides Konstantinidis, was crowned gold Olympic winner on March 31, 1896 for the 87km endurance road race, which started from Athens, went out to Marathon and ended at Faliro. At that first modern Olympic Games in 1896, the track events were held at the Faliro Velodrome – what is today known as the Karaiskaki Football Stadium.

    http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/cycling/cyclinghistory.html
    OLYMPIC HISTORY Track and road cycling have been part of the Games since 1896. Over the years, events have come and gone, distances have been altered, from the one lap race last seen in 1908 to the 12-hour race which made its only appearance at those inaugural Games in Athens. In Sydney, three events will be added to the programme: the Madison, the Keirin and the Olympic sprint. One race that has stood the test of time is the 1,000m match sprint, though there is no result for 1908, when the race was declared void and officials refused to allow it to be rerun. Two of the British riders in the final, Bejamin Jones and Clarence Kingsbury, both suffered punctures and dropped out, while Marice Schilles, of France, and Victor Johnson, of Britain, raced for the line, the Frenchman just getting the edge. However, they were outside the time limit of 1min 45sec and Schilles remains one of the Olympic champions that never officially was. If there was an element of British fixing in that race in London, the fixing of the event in Berlin 1936 was somewhat more blatant: Toni Merkens, of Germany, it was agreed by judges, had deliberately swerved into the path of Arie van Vliet, of the Netherlands, and gone on to take the title. The Dutch protest was upheld but rather than disqualify Merkens and promote Van Vliet, officials fined Merkens DM100 (about £30 in today's money). Van Vliert was compensated with victory in the 1,000m time trial the next day. Merkens died soon after being wounded in action on the Russian front in the Second World War.

    Reaching into his bag, Bieber retrieves a pair of binoculars and peers across the mammoth stadium to catch a glimpse of what could be causing the commotion. Adjusting the focus of his glasses, Bieber sees the face that will soon change the course of world history, the face of evil itself, the face of Adolf Hitler.
    A resident of the Schenley for 63 years, Bieber remembers the days when the street lamps were lit by hand, when there were civil defense blackouts, and when Foggy Bottom suffered from a frog infestation. He delivered newspapers to the Schenley building as a teenager, when the first Miss America Pageant winner, Margaret Gorman, still owned it.
    Fate introduced Bieber to the sport that would become his passion. While growing up in Southeast DC, the United States cycling champion, Charles Smithson, lived across the street from him. While one brilliant career ended, another started when Smithson retired and gave Bieber his equipment, bike, and jersey. Not long after, Bieber won his first title, District of Columbia champion, in 1927.
    A member of the Naval Reserves, just 28 days after Pearl Harbor, Bieber found himself called up to active duty and stationed aboard the USS Vestal, the second largest repair ship in the fleet. It was the Navy who taught him how to weld, and even sent him to GW to take math classes.

    Olympic fans, ask yourself this: why did you enjoy watching Tatiana Grigorieva vault with the pole? No, besides that. Could it be the same reason you enjoyed watching Jai Taurima in the long jump? Michelle Ferris in the cycling? The little-known Justin Norris in the swimming pool? Perhaps it could. The real reason (okay, the other reason) you loved watching Grigorieva in the pole vault is that she jumped a personal best. Put aside her obvious beauty (and the way she silenced 110,000 sports fans by placing a manicured finger to bee-stung lips). Put aside the silver medal (and the email called The Silver Medallist that is doing the rounds). What, really, is the sporting point? It is that Grigorieva did better than she had ever done before. Sure, American Stacy Dragila went higher and broke a world record. Bully for her. Grigorieva was also making history. Her own history. She jumped 4.55 metres and stunned herself.

    The stadium at the 1896 Athens Games, the first of the modern Olympics. The Olympic Games are the creation of the Ancient Greeks with records of the first competition dating back to 776 BC. The Games reigned supreme in Ancient Greece for 12 centuries until in 393 AD Emperor Theodosius founded them to be a pagan celebration and thus ended the competition. It wasn't until the late 1800's that Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin began researching and rallying support for the rebirth of the Olympic Games. His hard work succeeded and in 1896 Athens was the host city of the first of the modern Olympic Games.
    1896 Athens, Greece
    Thirteen countries participated at the 1896 Athens Games with around 300 athletes taking part in the competition. There were 43 events contested which fell into the following categories;
    athletics (track and field), cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.
