Teachers can use journal writing to meet specific goals, or the purpose can be wide open. Some teachers check journal writing and work on polishing skills; others use journals as the one "uncorrected" form of writing that students produce. Some teachers provide prompts to help students begin their writing; others leave decisions about the direction and flow of student journals up to the students. Education World talked with teachers who use daily journal writing in their classrooms. Included: Writing motivators that work from teachers who use them! Help MNet serve you better by completing our online teacher's survey. To help fulfil our mission, Media Awareness Network depends on support and feedback from our users. This summer we have partnered with Ipsos Reid to conduct a series of surveys across the country with parents, teachers, academics and librarians in order to measure media literacy in Canadian homes and to determine the status of media education in Canadian schools, universities and libraries. Responses to these surveys will provide us with the information we need to create programs and resources that address those issues and topics that are important to you. A key part of this research is this online survey for teachers and librarians. The survey comprises 25 questions and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. No personally-identifiable information is required and all responses are confidential.

Back to List of papers How do Preservice Teachers use Concept Maps to Organize Their Curriculum Content Knowledge? Brian Ferry, John Hedberg and Barry Harper University of Wollongong Abstract This paper reports on preservice teachers use of a concept mapping tool to create and modify concept maps about science related curriculum content knowledge. The preservice teachers who used the tool were planning science-based instruction that would be delivered to an elementary school class. Data gathered from interviews, journals and analysis of the concept maps constructed showed how the preservice students used the concept mapping tool to construct their curriculum content knowledge in the form of more powerful integrated patterns. It was also found that the process of concept map construction enhanced preservice teacher skills in planning instruction. Introduction Six uses of concept maps were identified by White and Gunstone (1992) and these were: to explore understanding of a limited aspect of the topic; to check whether learners understand the purpose of instruction; to see whether learners can make links between concepts; to identify changes that learners make in relationships between concepts; to find out which concepts are regarded as key ones; and to promote learner discussion. The findings from this study support the contention that the planning of instruction is an additional use of concept maps, with the process likely to be more important that the final product. Elements of the Short Story
by
Kathleen Dinneen and Maryanne O’Connor
Contents of Curriculum Unit 83.03.09:
To Guide Entry
For several years the City of New Haven has been using the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills as a criteria for evaluating its students. Each year on the Reading Section of the test, students show a deficiency in the areas of generalizations and inference. This deficiency shows an inability on the part of students to comprehend the “whole” of what they are reading. Their understanding is limited to the literal and the simple recollection of factual details. One way to improve students’ ability in the areas of forming generalizations and inferences is by exposing students to the elements of the short story. This unit is designed to be used by English and Reading teachers in the seventh and eighth grades. We have selected classic short stories which are available at a lower reading level as well as their original form. Each story can be used with high achieving students in its original form and is available in a form with a readability level of third, fourth or fifth grade for use with lower achieving students. All stories mentioned in this unit are available in books which are currently being used in the New Haven School System.

159. TechnoKids Computer Curriculum
Develops computer curriculum enabling teachers to deliver relevant technology instruction to students. Offers lesson plans and reproducible materials.
http://www.technokids.com/
TechnoKids Computer Curriculum uses a project-based approach to integrate computing skills into K-12 education. The curriculum is divided into six categories: Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior, Camp, and Teacher. Each category contains a set of projects designed to integrate a range of Information and Communication Technology skills into student learning including: word processing, programming, graphics, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, applied technology, telecommunications, databases, operating systems, and multimedia. Each project contains meaningful theme-related assignments that use Microsoft applications. For example, students produce a book advertisement using PowerPoint, write a report on endangered species using Word, analyze and graph survey results in Excel, and organize data on space missions using Access. Each project enhances skills in subject areas such as language arts, mathematics, geography, science, social studies, or visual arts. There are more than 60 projects that integrate technology into learning. You can offer the curriculum as a complete program for your school, or select just one to teach as part of an existing curriculum unit. Either way, your students will be learning essential technology skills that will prepare them for the digital age.
