Lizard's Random Comments
Updated 8/23/2000, new stuff at top , now I've often thought of doing some sort of regular 'roundup of the news' or the like, but my schedule is such that I'd never be able to keep it up. On the other hand, I hate for there to be anything happening in the world I don't chip in my hopelessly devalued two cents on. So in the spirit of compromise (Definition:Taking a barrel of fine wine, a barrel of sewage, mixing them together, and calling it even) I decided to toss up this, basically a scratch page where I can spew forth random commentary on any issues of the day/week/month, without going through all the work of composing an actual essay. I'm a pathetically lazy creature, you must understand. So then...without further ado (or a don't....yeah, I stole that from the Muppets, but dead men file no claims and I stole that from Bob Kanefsky, who isn't dead...oh, bother. (But AA Milne is dead, so I can get away with that one.)) here's my take on the burning, lukewarm, and thorougly extinguished issues of the day. (And the past couple of weeks, actually, as there's been a few microrants I've been wanting to get out for a while.)
New Stuff
Too many essays, not enough rants. Months go by while this page languishes. Sigh. Shows I'll never be a columnist, that's for sure. But anyway...on to the rants!

In two world firsts, Monash students have won the World Debating Championship for the second time in a row, this time with the first winning female team, consisting of masters philosophy student Kim Little and arts/law student Cathy Rossouw. Following on from the Monash success at the championships in the Philippines last year, Kim and Cathy were chosen to compete in the eight-day 20th World University Debating Championships in Sydney last month which involved 700 students from 106 universities in 26 countries. In the final, they defeated all-male teams from La Verne University in the United States and University College Dublin, as well as a mixed team from Glasgow University, arguing against the premise that 'Karl Marx would have approved of the Internet'. According to Kim, universities were reluctant in the past to send all-female teams to the championships as there was a perception that in the British parliamentary style of the competition, women could not match the aggressive interjection of the male debaters. "In fact the organisers described Monash as courageous for choosing an all-female top team," she said.

"The Teaching of Jesus Christ - Day to Day Righteousness"
Anxiety in Perspective
Matthew 6:25-34 What causes my anxiety? (verse 25a)
Why shouldn't I be anxious? (verses 25b-34)
- Reason #1: The Reality of Life (verse 25b)
- Reason #2: The Birds (verse 26)
- Reason #3: The Uselessness of Worry (verse 27)
- Reason #4: The Lilies (verses 28-30)
- Reason #5: The Father's Care (verses 31-32)
- Reason #6: The Troubles of Today (verse 34)
What will cure my anxiety? (verse 33) 1. Proper thinking ("for this reason...") 2. Faith ("O men of little faith...") 3. A kingdom focus (verse 33). Many of you remember the crisis that faced us in America about three years ago. People all across our land (and the world) were very concerned and anxious and worried about what would happen when we crossed the milestone from the year 1999 to year 2000. Many were concerned about the effect that this would have on our computers and, as a result, upon our life, as we know it. This concern was so great that it came to be known simply as "Y2K." I remember reading one article, published in the fall on 1998 that presented three possible scenarios as we entered the year 2000. The article was entitled, "Y2Chaos: What is Y2K and why should you care?" (Elijah Company, Fall 1998).
