Preterism and the Eclipse of Pre-millennialism by Dr. Larry Spargimino The following article on Preterism is a selected chapter from Larry's book the Anti-Prophets. If you're interest in getting the book, you can find it on Amazon.com Pre-millennialism has been the major eschatological position in America for over a century. Many, though not all, pre-millennialists are dispensational in their understanding of Scripture. Dispensationalism and pre-millennialism complement each other and are able to explain both the unity and diversity of Scripture, and provide a sound basis for understanding God's promises to Israel. This is something that cannot be done with other approaches to Scripture and certainly says much in their favor. Various developments on the world scene have done much to create an interest in prophecy. For many, the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948 was a confirmation of Bible prophecy. Added to that were a series of disasters- Bhopal, Chernobyl, AIDS, earthquakes, global warming, and others-that have created an "apocalyptic fever." Radical and far-reaching social changes such as the growing acceptance of the gay lifestyle, radical feminism, radical environmentalism, school shootings, and genetic experimentation, have all worked together to create the impression that "something momentous is going to happen soon." When life proceeds as usual and there is a general feeling of peace and safety, there is not much interest in biblical prophecy But when the very foundations of a society are shaken and the bizarre becomes the norm, "millennial madness" spreads like a plague.

Tips for First Aid/CPR January, 1999 - Stroke kills many people in North America every year. Many more who have a stroke face many years of frustrating and expensive rehabilitation. Early diagnosis can increase the person's chance of survival and through new drug therapy treatments, the extent of damage to the brain is lessened. A stroke is a "brain attack", often caused by the same damage to the arteries as happens in a heart attack. Knowing the signs and accessing immediate medical attention are of paramount importance.
    • Weakness and/or paralysis usually on one side of the body.
    • Slurred speech or inability to talk.
    • Distortion of the face or "facial droop", often associated with drooling.
    • Problems with vision, from double vision to blindness.
    • In a severe stroke the person may become unconscious.
These are some of the signs of stroke. If you see or experience any or all of them, immediately call for an ambulance. An early response by ambulance personnel and early access to a hospital will greatly influence the outcome of this all too common medical emergency. February, 1999

Imagine, for a moment, a possible scenario for the first day of school next January: Administrative computer systems scramble student records. Heating and ventilation systems shut down. Districtwide computer networks grind to a halt. Security doors won't open. Voice mail systems fall silent. Payroll and accounting systems print nonsense numbers and the staff doesn't get paid. Houston, we have a Y2K problem. Chances are, few school districts will experience a computer meltdown this severe when classes resume on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000. But the extent to which your district will be affected by administrative and instructional disruptions will depend in large part on the steps you take now to head off year 2000-related computer failures. (For a look at what some districts have done, see the sidebar below.)

Extra! Extra! Eight Great Web Sites Connect News to Your Curriculum!
Discover eight great sites that will help you link the day's news to your curriculum and challenge students to look beyond the news! Connect the news to science, geography, social studies, art, math, languages arts, critical thinking, and technology! Also: Six on-line news quizzes for students of all ages. You probably use a newspaper in your classroom, at least occasionally, to teach current events. Newspapers connect your students to the real world and provide a better understanding of the world's events than almost any other news medium. Even newspapers, however, are limited in their ability to explain in detail the background of a story or to connect the real news with what students are learning during the rest of the school day. The sites featured this week can help you enhance and extend students' understanding of current events by linking them to other areas of the curriculum. Whether kids read about a tornado in Oklahoma, a war in Kosovo, or a corporate merger in Japan, one of the sites is sure to provide insights into the causes and effects of newsworthy events.

Disaster Management: Healthcare Professionals Working Together
A Conversation With David Vukich, MD, Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida
By Kelly M. Pyrek The first in a series examining disaster management and bioterrorism as related to infectious diseases. Q: In your opinion, is the average US hospital prepared for a mass disaster like the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks? A: US hospitals are doing a good job with what they've got. However, the average hospital is prepared for a disaster of only modest scope and complexity, such as 30-50 casualties at most and those better not all be critical, as many hospitals could not take that many patients. The average hospital has only modest resources before any disaster and, with personnel and resource reductions, they operate at or near capacity most of the time. My own emergency department (ED) continuously holds admitted patients because we do not have in-patient beds available. Now, imagine loading another 20, 30, or 50% critical on top of this. That being said, the New York and DC hospitals did very well with the tragedies of Sept 11. They did a terrific job and clearly could have handled many more patients. But what would have happened if the numbers were reversed, if there were 6,500 critically injured and 1,000 dead? If we suffer a bioterrorism attack, these may be more like the numbers we see.

The National Research Council Study of Y2K:
What Happened, Why, and What Can We Learn From It?
4:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 1999
The George washington University by Mark Haselkorn, University of Washington
The National Academy of Sciences National Research Council intends to conduct a study of Y2K effects. This presentation will describe the study and will address three questions: 1. What is the nature of the y2k problem?
2. What will happen?
3. What will we learn from all this?
Summary

Y2K offers an extraordinary opportunity to learn from a world-wide, predictable disruption; to study before and after the effects of massive local adjustments to a highly interdependent yet not fully integrated complex system; and to learn how current management structures and practices could be improved to prevent and cope with systemic vulnerabilities that reside not only within organizations, sectors, and geographical boundaries, but also across them. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent on Y2K to minimize disruption and harm; hundreds of billions more are anticipated to determine who is to blame and who deserves compensation. Yet almost no resources have been marshaled to determine what happened, why, and what we can learn from this unique event. This final phase will certainly occur, but if we do not start immediately, the chance to gather essential qualitative and quantitative data will be gone forever and we will lose an historic research opportunity.

aftermath of Y2K Hoax...!
A Review of: - the aftermath to the Y2K Scare - the remaining threat of a financial Meltdown in the world's Stock Markets and Financial Institutions, brought about by the massive dumping of Cash liquidity by governments to prevent a Y2K run on the Banks in Dec 1999. This liquidity provided the cash for a totally irrational speculative spree in a 'New Economy' which defied every rule of the text books. This new economy has now proven to be just a massive 'bubble economy', the puncturing of which could be even more disastrous than what the Y2K threat has posed to be. - how to survive
Y2K fears have proven to be the biggest Financial Hoax of all time. But
The successful Y2K achievement for mankind, may yet prove to be the very opium to lull the masses into a lethargic state of non-preparation when the real Time of Trouble comes upon the world as prophesied in the Bible. This is referred to as the "Great Tribulation" or "Time of Jacob's Trouble" to precede the establishment of new Universal Rule by the Creator God of Israel. The Message of BIBLE REVELATIONS is applicable not only for Crisis Times, but also for Good Times. That the world is currently experiencing critical and abnormal events is very evident - except to those who do not want to know.

University begins final Y2K countdown
As the end of the year and the turn of the century approaches, there are still some uncertainties about the complexities of interacting systems and the so-called "Y2K Bug." Ohio State officials say they have investigated and reported on every foreseeable affect that the "Y2K Bug" might have, but can't predict the unforeseen which may occur. Most experts, including those at Ohio State, are confident that the nation's major utilities and computer networks will make the change from 1999 to 2000 without difficulty. A task force consisting of representatives from throughout the University assisted with the Y2K preparations. In addition, each college and administrative unit at Ohio State appointed a Y2K coordinator to head up Y2K readiness efforts at the local level. Beginning at 7 a.m. Jan. 1, faculty and staff can check the status of key University operations at the OSU Y2K Web site at www.osu.edu/Year2000

President's Message from Don Rima
Eat your heart out, Rand McNally! As you may know, I've been in "house hunting mode" for several months now with my parents moving up to Virginia. My guess is that you may have been through such an experience, yourself, at one time or another. So, when one asks, "What is it, and how do I get there?", you know viscerally what I am referring to. You don't need a road map. If only upgrades were the same. One of the many struggles we have in this industry is staying current in many areas. One of these areas is keeping current in our operating system release. Those of us who are senior citizens in the industry recall briefing sessions on how to perform the migration to the current system from a previous release. We've brought that goodness back! We've asked Ovid Williams from the IBM Technical Support Division to give us a how-to on the migration path from most RISC releases to V4R2. Also, following his presentation, some of our own membership from United Payers And Providers will field questions and offer pointers from their recent and successful upgrade to V4R2. So, plan now for an info filled evening of news and tips that you can use to get the new features and functionality of V4R2 loaded and running on your RISC box. A very special thanks goes to Roland Mitchell for his embedded SQL presentation last month. His presentation and handout of examples was top drawer and a very good addition to one's programming toolkit.
