You try calling 911, but the police and emergency services are nowhere to be found. The computer at your local bank crashes. ATMs shut down. Computer malfunctions cause breakdowns in nuclear reactors and strategic missile systems as well as disruptions in world trade and oil shipments. Government payroll checks and Social Security checks may not be delivered. Crime begins to run rampant. This "Domino Effect" causes gold and silver coin premiums to rise. All because of a well-known computer bug called, "Y2K." "Y2K" is an abbreviation for "Year 2000." The computer industry insiders are predicting everything from mass transit shutdowns, to power outages, to banking failures, to defense system crashes. Even institutions which are ready for the changeover will not be willing to connect with other computer systems unless they can be proven to be Y2K compliant. Think of what would happen if the following facilities went down and stayed down for months or even years: banks, railroads, public utilities, telephone lines, military communications and financial markets. What about Social Security and Medicare? The doomsayers are calling this "The End of The World As We Know It." Depending on the writer or speaker, this has ranged from the Biblical end of the world, to the economic, ecological, nuclear or moral end of the world.

Some experts think the situation is not that series. "Chances are, few school districts will experience a computer meltdown this severe when classes resume on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000." Others predict doomsday scenarios such as the following for K-12 schools: "Administrative computer systems scramble student records. Heating and ventilation systems shut down. District-wide computer networks grind to a halt. Security doors won't open. Voice mail systems fall silent. Payroll and accounting systems print nonsense numbers – and the staff doesn't get paid." Some computer programmers have become survivalists and are stockpiling food and other supplies. Marketers are taking advantage of the millennium madness and selling survival kits, generators, blankets, oil-burning lanterns, and more. How did this problem start? "When the first computer programmers went to work in the 1950s and '60s, they took a shortcut. Instead of entering all four numbers in a year, such as 1999, they used only the last two digits: 99. That way they could save valuable space in the computer's memory. Besides, in the 1950s, the year 2000 seemed a long way off! Computer experts figured that all the programs would be different by now. They were wrong. Many of the original computer programs from the 1950s and '60s are, in fact, still in use today. HOME FAITH ARTICLES CONTACT Thoughts on Y2k Y2 who? Oh come now! Surely, by now you have heard of the coming computer crisis predicted. For the turn of the century. OK So you haven't heard. Y2K is an abbreviation for the year 2000. This abbreviation was chosen by the computer community to represent possible problems computers might experience when the date changes from 1999 to 2000. "Y" stands for years, "2" stands for two, and "K" is the Latin abbreviation for thousand. Thus, Y2K stands for the year two thousand. The problem anticipated is a result of an oversight of computer programmers in earlier decades. Most never anticipated that their programming work would still be in service by the end of the century, so they used two digit date codes while programming to save precious space. For example, instead of using 1975, they would use just "75" with the "19" being understood. The problem is that much if this programming is still being used. Consequently, when the year 2000 tolls around, that affected computers will interpret the year as "00" following "99" as 1900, instead of 2000, possibly causing failure. OK. Now you know what "Y2K" is.

The last year of this century, 1999, has been a year that will be remembered for many troubles! Not only has there been so many natural disasters, but there is a moral rot that has set in all over the world, but especially in the west, that has our society crumbling at its very foundation. As we start into the new millennium, the hope of Jesus' return is more probable than ever because Jesus, speaking of current events such as the ones we face today said, "But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because, your redemption is drawing near" (Luke 21:28 (NAS). So, why is the return of Jesus such a great hope? Answer: The Bible promises that when Jesus returns to this earth, things on earth will greatly improve! Let's examine some of these great promises. Following Revelation 19 which describes the glorious return of Jesus Christ, Chapter 20 declares that Satan will be bound for 1,000 years. Can you imagine a world no longer influenced by Satan, a world that is no longer influenced by his dark, evil ways? One immediate blessing the world will realize with Satan bound is there will be no more war.
