"To help [students] to improve, introduce 'sound-alike word' practice. This could start from a listening perspective—you state one of two identified sound-alike words, and on a piece of paper they mark one of two pictures (soccer or circle). Then repeat the word in a sentence where structure and meaning will give hints as to which word could fit the sentence. When they start to realize that hearing a word will affect their ability to comprehend a sentence, they will listen harder, and that is the first step toward them concentrating on pronouncing the words more clearly themselves." In the Idea Cookbook, teachers are encouraged to submit their teaching insights on topics ranging from business English to classroom discipline. The wide variety of clever classroom tricks is astounding.

Governor Declares September Literacy Month
(Des Moines, Tuesday, September 7, 1999) - Emphasizing the importance of basic literacy skills for success in life and work, Governor Tom Vilsack declared September as Literacy Month in Iowa. First Lady Christie Vilsack presented the proclamation on literacy during a news conference at a Des Moines elementary school. "The lack of basic adult literacy skills affects Iowans' ability to be successful in the workplace," according to Sally Schroeder, Adult Education consultant, Iowa Department of Education. "It also impacts on Iowa's future, since adult literacy affects the basic health, welfare, and academic success of the children of our state as well." While Iowa adults, on average, outperform the nation on tasks that measure literacy, consider these facts:
  • 39% of Iowa adults are at the lowest two literacy levels measured by the Iowa State Adult Literacy Survey as compared to 50% of the adult population nationally;
  • More than 40% of the U.S. workforce lack the basic literacy skills to effectively function in today's workforce environment.

    Tips for First Aid/CPR January, 1999 - Stroke kills many people in North America every year. Many more who have a stroke face many years of frustrating and expensive rehabilitation. Early diagnosis can increase the person's chance of survival and through new drug therapy treatments, the extent of damage to the brain is lessened. A stroke is a "brain attack", often caused by the same damage to the arteries as happens in a heart attack. Knowing the signs and accessing immediate medical attention are of paramount importance.
    • Weakness and/or paralysis usually on one side of the body.
    • Slurred speech or inability to talk.
    • Distortion of the face or "facial droop", often associated with drooling.
    • Problems with vision, from double vision to blindness.
    • In a severe stroke the person may become unconscious.
    These are some of the signs of stroke. If you see or experience any or all of them, immediately call for an ambulance. An early response by ambulance personnel and early access to a hospital will greatly influence the outcome of this all too common medical emergency. February, 1999

Prepared for anything By Terry Rindfleisch La Crosse Tribune Local hospital officials talk about potential disasters all the time now. Advertisement Advertise Here Directory They have plans for fire, telephone, water, heating and power failures, chemical spills and mass casualties. There are plans for bombs, hostages, tornados and child abduction. There also are evacuation plans and diversion plans for a major disaster.
For many years, hospitals have been required to have such comprehensive plans for accreditation, but hospital officials say they now are better prepared than ever because of preparations for Y2K and planning after 9/11.
"Y2K forced everyone to dust off policies since the Cold War, those plans for air raids that had been on the shelves," said Philip Niemer, Franciscan Skemp Healthcare director of safety and security.
"9/11 actually forced us to use the policies," he said.

Marching into the Millennium: Classroom Activities for the Year 2000
Talk about teachable moments! How often does a year end in three zeroes? At my count, this opportunity won't come around for another thousand years! Wise teachers will capitalize on this special time in history. This week, Education World provides you with the tools to do just that! Included: Four millennium-related online projects for students across the grades and online resources to teach about the new millennium and the new century. "The last thousand years have brought us many important people who have made significant contributions to our history," Gerardo Barrios, a social studies teacher at Nobel Middle School in Los Angeles, will tell his students this week. Then Barrios will share an issue of Life magazine that includes a list of 100 of those people.
"You don't have to agree with the list," Barrios will tell his students. "It's merely an instrument for class discussion."
