Early diagnosis can increase the person's chance of survival and through new drug therapy treatments, the extent of damage to the brain is lessened. A stroke is a "brain attack", often caused by the same damage to the arteries as happens in a heart attack. Knowing the signs and accessing immediate medical attention are of paramount importance. Weakness and/or paralysis usually on one side of the body. Slurred speech or inability to talk. Distortion of the face or "facial droop", often associated with drooling. Problems with vision, from double vision to blindness. In a severe stroke the person may become unconscious. These are some of the signs of stroke. If you see or experience any or all of them, immediately call for an ambulance. An early response by ambulance personnel and early access to a hospital will greatly influence the outcome of this all too common medical emergency. February, 1999
