Wireless Graphs of Current Space Weather Data The following graphs show measurements taken by satellites and ground based instruments to monitor effects from disturbances in the space environment. One such disturbance is called a solar flare. A solar flare occurs when magnetic energy in the Sun's atmosphere is released suddenly. The energy release is tremendous, causing radiation to be emitted across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. (Note that you may need to press the refresh button on your web browser to update the graphs). When a solar flare occurs, the initial release in magnetic energy can be detected as soft x-rays. Instruments aboard NOAA's GOES satellites continuously monitor these soft x-rays. The following near-real time graph shows measurements from one of the satellites, GOES-12. d Solar flares appear as spikes in the plot. The flares are classified according to their peak intensity and categorized as C, M, or X class. Class M5 or greater are considered major events. The largest event yet recorded was an X28 which occurred at 19:50 UT Nov 4, 2003. The following graph shows flare events which have occurred within the last 5 days. d During the second or impulsive stage of a flare, protons and electrons are accelerated to high levels and hard x-rays, radio waves, and gamma rays are emitted.
