Current Events in Victoria, British Columbia DATELINE: August 8 to August 19, 2005 On Location: Filming scenes for the upcoming feature film " X-Men 3 " with Patrick Stewart and Halle Berry right here at our doorstep - literally! From August 08 to August 19, 2005 scenes will be filmed around Hatley Castle and the Esquimalt Lagoon right here at our doorstep. There is a crew of about 200 people for the third instalment in the sci-fi series. Most of the filming will be limited to the first floor of Hatley Castle, the Italian Garden and croquet pitch. As in X-Men 2, Hatley Castle is front and centre for the interior shots, taking on the role of Professor Xavier's School for the Gifted, the X-Men's headquarters.
The cast of Hollywood A-list stars are back for X-Men 3, with Patrick Stewart as professor Charles Xavier, Halle Berry as Storm, Ian McKellen as Magneto and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Kelsey Grammar, Vinnie Jones and Maggie Grace have been added in the roles of new mutant characters. The third instalment based on the popular Marvel Comic, the film is being directed by Brett Ratner, who took over when X-Men 2 director Matthew Vaughn dropped out for personal reasons. Colwood residents may recall a helicopter battle above Esquimalt Lagoon during the filming of X-Men 2 that caused a bit of a stir, because it was filmed late at night.

Media Archeology: Live Cinema
aurora Picture Show, April 13 - 17, 2005
by Jahje Bath Ives
Hmm, how do I explain the Media Archeology: Live Cinema put on by Aurora Picture Show? I spent five nights riding the current of the Media Archeology Festival put on by Aurora Picture Show who gathered up some of the craziest media-hungry boy bands out there who cut up films, creating live video zines and website happenings. I say boy bands because, although there were lots of screaming ladies in the audience (if not screaming, then howling with laughter sometimes), there was only one female performer involved in the entire extravaganza. Which made me wonder, are men the only ones who have enough free time to do this stuff, or do ladies just like to do things solo? Wednesday April 13 at Aurora Picture Show, Animal Charm: Animal Charm is a duo composed of two dumpster-diving media buffs based in LA, who through the years have gathered some rather strange video. In LA they often perform in clubs as video djs, mixing images in an almost trance like way. They often have a set list that they use as a guide from where they start their media layering and explorations. One member of Animal Charm explained to me that they often have an intended statement or idea that they are trying to convey to the audience when they perform. They look at their work in the context of a live video collage, with an emphasis on free association. The work that they created at Aurora felt a bit like the boat tunnel at

Current events behind band's latest disk By Paul Maldonado Jr.
Tribune Reporter
August 5, 2005
Suicide Machines put the agitaon the band's latest long-player, "War Profiteering Is Killing Us All." The Detroit quartet - Jason Navarro on vocals, Dan Lukacinsky on guitar, Rich Tschirhart on bass and Ryan Vanderberghe on drums - was motivated by what they felt was malaise and complacency during these dangerous times. Employing a more bombastic sound but with its trademark passion and gusto, the groups tears through 14 songs in a little more than 30 minutes. It still dishes the reggae and ska flavor on such tunes as "Ghosts On Sunset Boulevard," "Nuclear Generator" and "Capitalist Suicide," while commenting about the poor turnout of younger voters during last year's presidential election ("17% 18 to 25") and the state of society ("Capitalist Suicide," "Red Flag," "Bottomed Out" and "Hands Tied"). Lukacinsky spoke to The Tribune from his Detroit home before he and his band mates embarked on an 18-show, three-week tour. He got excited and animated and was very eloquent and well informed. Tribune: Have you guys been to Albuquerque before?
