New Orleans
Like everyone, I've been following the terrible tragedy of New Orleans in news and blogs, feeling deeply but not writing much myself. So many of us who have visited New Orleans have been recalling it, thankful for having had that opportunity, and sad at the loss of all that unique beauty and culture, and horrified at the loss of life and the continuing struggles of the homeless. Others have written far better than I could. I'd like to point to two very meaningful ones by an artist and a writer who both speak of the great culture of that city, that is deeply based on its people. Artist James W. Bailey blogs about art at Black Cat Bone and lately of course it's been all about New Orleans where he lived for 20 years. I was particularly moved by the one about the hoodoo culture in New Orleans . (I thought it originally came from Haiti though.) Author Anne Rice , who was born in New Orleans and has lived there many years, wrote a wonderful article Do you know what it means to lose New Orleans? (via Conscientious ). Rice extols the vibrant black culture, but also the Irish, Italian and German immigrants who came in, who all made New Orleans a special home.

Patrick Street Visiting from the USA, this all-star legendary Irish band has already achieved cult status. Featuring the magnificent fiddle playing of Kevin Burke (ex-Bothy Band), the accordion wizardry of Jackie Daly (ex-De Dannan), the haunting vocals and mandolin playing of Andy Irvine (ex-Planxty) and inventive guitar licks from Ged Foley. Patrick Street's most recent addition is John Carthy, a known phenomenon amongst trad musicians; he can play a right-handed fiddle with his left-hand! He is also an excellent banjo and flute player - Carthy is a welcome addition to this brilliant group. If there is anything approaching true 'supergroup' status in Irish music, it's Patrick Street.....don't miss! Plus support Friday Sept 9th Doors 7.30pm Free Entry

This foundation is enhanced through intermediate art courses and an introduction to art criticism, history, applied design, and computer art. In upper level courses, students integrate skills and technology to prepare a thesis exhibition or performance supported by an articulate written element. Each students capstone is developed with continual encouraging input from faculty and peers during their tenure at USF.

Overview In grades 3-5 children continue to be family centered, but an increasing emphasis will be placed on peer relationships. Students of this age still generally want to please the teacher, but they are not as demonstrative. This more independent behavior should not be construed as an indication that they care less about the teacher's opinion. The art classroom promotes self-discipline as students take responsibility for sharing space, and room and supply clean up. Respect for each other's opinions, work, and personal space must be encouraged. Assessment It is appropriate for the assessment process to be broadened to include self and peer participation in evaluating projects according to the established objectives. A noncompetitive atmosphere continues to promote student self-esteem. Instruction Students at this age display increased manual dexterity, however, their skills may not keep pace with their desire for increasingly realistic work. This may lead to self-consciousness and insecurity in their artistic ability. The teacher's role at this stage is to provide a positive working environment, facilitate growth of technical skills, and sharpen observational skills. Children use a broader range of subject matter and media. Ideas gained from independent reading are incorporated into their art. They grow more sophisticated in depicting movement, spatial relationships and emotions in their work.
