Marsden Hartley: American Modern
Marsden Hartley was a key member of America's first artistic avant-garde. He was a leading figure in the circle of artists and writers surrounding Alfred Stieglitz in the early decades of the 20th century in New York. Through a generous bequest from Hudson Walker of the collection he built with his wife, Ione, the Weisman Art Museum holds the largest number of works by Hartley. This retrospective will be drawn entirely from the museum's rich collection. This exhibition opens June 4, 1997 and runs through September 8, 1997.

(Redirected from Visual art The visual arts are a class of artforms , including painting sculpture photography , and others, that focus on the creation of artworks which are primarily visual in nature. The visual arts are distinguished from the performing arts language arts culinary arts , and other such classes of artwork. The definition is not strict, and many artistic disciplines involve aspects of the visual arts as well other types. In Britain until recently the fine arts painting sculpture printmaking , et cetera—were seen as distinct from craft disciplines such as applied art design textiles , and the various metalworking disciplines such as blacksmithing and jewelery . This distinction arose from the work of a group of artists led by William Morris known as the Arts and Crafts Movement whose political aim was to value vernacular artforms as much as high forms. The movement was at odds with modernists who sought to withhold the high arts from the masses by keeping them esoteric. The result of the conflict between the two groups was to politicise the products of what we now know as visual artists. British

America 's first well-known school of painting—the Hudson River School —appeared in . As with music and literature, this development was delayed until artists perceived that the New World offered subjects unique to itself; in this case the westward expansion of settlement brought the transcendent beauty of frontier landscapes to painters' attention. The Hudson River painters' directness and simplicity of vision influenced such later artists as Winslow Homer ), who depicted rural America—the sea, the mountains, and the people who lived near them. Middle-class city life found its painter in Thomas Eakins ), an uncompromising realist whose unflinching honesty undercut the genteel preference for romantic sentimentalism. Controversy soon became a way of life for American artists. In fact, much of American painting and sculpture since 1900 has been a series of revolts against tradition. "To hell with the artistic values," announced Robert Henri ). He was the leader of what critics called the "ash-can" school of painting, after the group's portrayals of the squalid aspects of city life. Soon the ash-can artists gave way to modernists arriving from
