  • Comparing News Media
    Grade Level:
    Subjects: Language Arts, Social Studies
News stories may be presented differently by different news sources. Record a 30-minute television news program covering national and/or international stories. Make a note of what stories are covered and the time devoted to each. Record a radio news broadcast, and examine a newspaper. Look for stories covering the same topics covered on television. Compare the coverage of the same story in each of these three news sources. List and compare some of the characteristics you notice for each source. Our newest source of news is the Internet. Visit an Internet news site and look for one of the same stories there. Be sure to look on web sites produced by the same companies who produced the television, radio and newspapers you analyzed. Compare these Internet news sites with television, radio, and newspaper reports. How is news on the internet similar to these other sources? How is it different? Which news media do you think does the best job of explaining issues? Why? Select a current news story in your school or community. Using the characteristics you identified for each news source, work in groups to prepare a newspaper article, radio news script, and television broadcast reporting the story.

Associated Press 07:01 PM Jul. 31, 2005 PT NEW YORK Much of the talk around Al Gore's new Current TV network has been broadly philosophical, like the former vice president's statement that "we want to be the television homepage for the internet generation." With its debut Monday, Current TV will be judged by the same mundane standards as other networks on whether its programming can hold a viewer's interest. Gore and his fellow investors envision Current as a sounding board for young people, a step beyond traditional notions of interactivity. They want viewers to contribute much of the network's content now that quality video equipment is widely available.

Why is it important to talk with your kids about what they see on the news?
As adults, we depend on "The News" as our primary source for information about the world we live in. Whether it's the local newspaper, nightly TV newscasts, cable news networks, news radio, or Web sites, graphic footage and accounts of the latest happenings in the world are being delivered right into our homes 24 hours a day. This constant barrage can be overwhelming for adults, but it can be especially confusing and frightening for young children. Many adults do not realize how many kids actually watch TV news or read the newspaper. In addition, consider the opportunities kids have to be exposed to the news. Maybe you listen to news radio in the morning while you drive the kids to school. Perhaps you read the newspaper at the breakfast table. Remember, while you're reading an article on page seven, your kids may be staring at the front page headlines. You might watch the evening news while helping your kids with their homework. Or they may be exposed to a "newsflash" during their favorite sit-com. Even if you avoid exposing your kids to the news, they still get the latest news accounts from their peers.

    Background Reading
In many cases, when working on a topic currently in the news, you will want to prepare by doing some background reading. Books are often a good source of information about the geography of a place or the history of events that led to the events in which you are now interested. Books can be found at UNB Libraries by using our catalogue, Quest . Be aware, however, that the information in books, even those recently published, is often out-of-date. More background information may be obtained from encyclopedias. Paper copies may be found in the HIL Reference Department. As well, the Britannica Online or the Canadian Encyclopedia may be consulted.
