Book Preface
Needed: A Science of Sustainability When world leaders and delegates from 190 nations met in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002 for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, a host of urgent issues filled their agenda. Among the pressing problems they debated were global climate change, freshwater shortages, dwindling forests, biodiversity losses, food insecurity, over-exploited fish stocks, emergent ecological diseases, dependence on fossil fuels, and the role of social, political and economic factors in environmental degradation. Underlying these issues was a division between the world's rich citizens, who want to protect nature and the 80 percent of the world's population living in the poorest countries who insist that they can't be concerned with safeguarding natural resources until they achieve simple survival. This division was highlighted by South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki who said in his opening comments: "A global human society based on poverty for many and prosperity for a few, characterized by islands of wealth, surrounded by a sea of poverty is unsustainable. The tragic result of this is the avoidable increase in human misery and ecological degradation."

REAL SCIENCE EcoHealth is the brainchild of Dr. Jonathan Patz , assistant professor at the highly regarded Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. He serves as director of the Program on Health Effects of Global Environmental Change and teaches a graduate-level course entitled "The Global Environment and Public Health." Several years ago, Dr. Patz gave a lecture at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Afterwards, an audience member from a foundation suggested creating a website that would make cutting-edge environmental science accessible to students and teachers.

Nature's Wisdom Celebrated at 2005 World Exposition AICHI, Japan
, March 28, 2005 (ENS) - The 2005 World Exposition opened Friday in Aichi Prefecture with the theme of taking inspiration from nature's wisdom to create a new direction for humanity which is sustainable and harmonious with nature. Before it closes on September 25, more than 15 million visitors are expected to view the pavilions and take in the cultural events at this complex in the Nagoya Eastern Hills. "This is not a theme that we have chosen lightly," say the organizers of the first exposition of the 21st century, the Japan Association for the 2005 World Exposition. Recognizing that rapid technological development, mass production and mass consumption have brought about desertification, global warming, and a shortage of natural resources, the organizers said, "Only recently have we realized the enormity of our loss." "Learning from the world's vast collection of wisdom and methods of interaction with nature found around the globe, we hope to bring the world together for the creation of a global society allowing the multitude of cultures and civilizations to coexist together," the organizers said.
