Coral bleaching debate warming up
Thursday, 14 June 2001
Could coral bleaching sometimes help a reef survive? A controversial new report has cast doubt on claims linking global warming with the widespread collapse of much of the world's coral reefs.
The report offers a contentious new perspective on coral bleaching - the loss of the algae that normally live inside the reef-building animals and are essential for their survival.
Bleaching is associated with increased seawater temperature and is widely agreed as the cause of the massive destruction of coral reefs in many parts of the world during the El Nino event of 1997-98.
However, the report in today's Nature , questions the widely-held belief that bleaching is universally damaging. Instead it suggests massive die-offs like the one seen in 1998 may in fact be merely unfortunate side-effects of a mechanism that ultimately ensures corals can survive a warmer world.
Andrew Baker of the New York Aquarium describes how corals transplanted from deep water into shallow water were bleached but survived, while about 20 per cent of those transplanted into greater depths ended up dying, despite suffering less bleaching.
He suggests that by bleaching, the corals take a gamble that allows them to swap their long-term algal partners for new ones, which may be better adapted to the new conditions.
