A Detroit Cultural Jewel for More Than 70 Years
Music Hall
Center for the Performing Arts stands at the gateway of downtown Detroit's entertainment district as the last remaining legitimate stage theatre in the area. Founded in 1928 as The Wilson Theatre, Music Hall remains true to its mission of presenting high-quality programming to a variety of audiences, while preserving and maintaining a nationally recognized historic building and remaining a financially viable institution.
For nearly a century, Music Hall has provided metropolitan Detroit residents with diverse artistic and educational performing arts opportunities. Following the completion of an extensive six-year, $6.5 million renovation and restoration in 1995, both loyal and new audiences can appreciate the theatre's impressive design and craftsmanship. By the very nature of its 1701-seat facility, excellent sight lines, and superb acoustics, Music Hall has earned its reputation as a truly wonderful venue to see intimate theatre and dance productions.

The performing arts include theater motion pictures drama comedy ... magic and the marching arts , such as brass bands , etc. Artists who participate in these arts are called performers, including actors comedians singers dancers , and musicians There is also a specialized form of fine art in which the artist performs his or her work live to an audience. This is called Performance art The performing arts differ from the plastic arts insofar as the former uses the artist's own body, face and/or presence as a medium while the latter uses materials such as clay, metal or paint which can be molded or transformed to create some art object . Of course, most performance art also involves some form of plastic art, perhaps in the creation of props . Dance was often referred to as a plastic art during the Modern dance era. New Children's, Public Affairs and Visual Art Series Also Unveiled PASADENA, CA, January 8, 2000 - The performing arts will take center stage on PBS with the debut of PBS Showcase, a series of evenings linking arts and performance programs around specific themes, it was announced today at the Television Critics Association Press Tour. Thirteen/WNET New York's GREAT PERFORMANCES series has been chosen to create the first PBS Showcase, a night devoted to the religiously themed works of Andrew Lloyd Webber, on Wednesday, April 5. Subsequent PBS Showcase evenings, scheduled 3-4 times per year, will be presented by a variety of PBS member stations and producing organizations. PBS also unveiled three other new programs: an animated children's series focusing on American history at the time of the Revolution; a public affairs series that probes the hopes and dreams of Americans in a fresh, unconventional way; and SISTER WENDY's latest adventures in the art world, which take her to six prominent American museums.
