COOL conference
In March, 10 Vanderbilt students and two staff members attended the Idealist.org COOL Conference. "The conference was an incredible opportunity to network with other people interested in positively changing society. Additionally, I learned a great deal about being a successful activist," said junior Meredith Bates, who both attended and presented a workshop at the conference. Each year, Idealist.org, a nationally known non-profit organization information database, holds the COOL Conference about social change for over a thousand students from all over the United States and the world. These students and staff members are interested in making a positive impact on the world in some fashion. This March, the conference was held at University of California at Berkeley. For four days, students attended five different workshops, a forum, and a plenary session about topics ranging from "Corporate Responsibility" to "Work in the Non-Profit World" to "Getting Congress to Listen to You." They also attended an information fair where hundreds of non-profit, government, and other social service organizations disseminated information and recruited volunteers and employees.

I accept that University students have the capacity to take responsibility to direct their own learning experience, and this has an impact on how my courses are developed, taught and assessed.
