Start early! These scholarship applications can be lengthy and require a great deal of thought and preparation. They are extremely competitive and you must work hard to make your application excellent and noteworthy. Determine your goals and focus on them. Your course of study and your extracurriular activities should reflect your interests and passions. Selection for these awards is based on your entire life, not just your GPA, and those students who are consistent in their work and play have a much better chance at winning. Develop your personal statement NOW. It is never too early to begin work on your personal statement, which is a key component for many of these prestigious awards. Keep an up-to-date resume and add to it constantly. Research. Many of these awards require comprehensive discussions of current problems, research projects and/or courses of study. To adequately prepare something like this takes a lot of time and work, but the payoff can be great! Stay up on current events. No matter which award you are interested in, you should be knowledgeable and conversant about current events. You should read a GOOD national newspaper every day (e.g.

28. Office Of Nationally Competitive Awards: Developing As A Person And A Student
Make sure to read about current events as well. Remember, there is a world beyond OU, No upcoming events. No upcoming deadlines. No current listings.

Developing as a person and a student
College years provide an opportunity to grow as a student as well as a person. By failing to achieve in both facets, a student may have trouble becoming a successful graduate, but if sufficient effort is put into both aspects, a graduate will emerge well-prepared for success after college. Moreover, a matured student with a will-rounded education will have a greater opportunity to win a prestigious award that can be used to pursue graduate studies. Because preparation for the future has much in common with the ideal development of a human for any worthy goal in life, we recommend the following guidelines for optimal growth during your college career. Give your best effort academically from the very beginning. A low grade point average becomes more and more difficult to raise as quarters go by. Get to know your teachers and their expectations of you. By learning to adapt to what your teachers expect academically, you will learn to deal with different types of people you will work with in your lifetime. In addition, make sure teachers know you as a person by participating in class and making use of teachers' office hours. By knowing you as a person, teachers will be able to write better recommendations for graduate school and job applications. Also, make sure to have regular contact with someone outside of school - such as a minister or employer - who can give you a solid non-academic recommendation. Participate in volunteer activities on and off campus. Ohio University offers lists of volunteer opportunities, in addition to those offered by outside organizations such as churches and community groups.

U.S. SENATE VOTE ON DEATH GRATUITY Voting 25 For and 75 Against, the Senate on Wednesday, April 13th, failed to kill an amendment increasing the military death gratuity from $12,420 to $100,000, payable for all deaths during active duty, not just those occurring in combat as is the case now. The higher figure was added to HR 1268. Depending upon insurance levels, survivors could receive up to $500,000 from gratuity and insurance.
A Yes vote OPPOSED while a NO vote SUPPORTED the expansion of the death gratuity. Ah! The ways of our legislators are a mystery as what a vote really means! IDENTITY THEFT Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the nation and the VA is taking action to safeguard confidential information. The changes will ensure veteran's personal information is protected and helps prevent the theft of important benefits and services that they earned by their military service. A newly designed ID card, formerly known as the Veterans' Identification card (VIC), will have the veterans' photos on the front and will identify them as enrolled in the VA's health care system. The card includes the words "service connected" under the photo if the veteran has a service connected disability Veterans should request the new card at their local VA Medical Center. VA hopes to complete the conversion to the new, safer card by mid-November 2005. The existing cards will remain valid until the veteran receives the new card.

The US military has categories of stupidity. The highest is “gross public dumb.” But a higher category is needed for moments like the “bus interview” by Louisiana Governor Blanco. It is spectacularly stupid. You’ve got to see this to believe it. Interview of Governor Blanco by John Hill of Louisiana Gannett News, 19 September, 2005 “GANNETT: In hindsight, what would you have done differently in the first response? “BLANCO: Well, I would have placed less confidence in a structure elsewhere (the Federal Emergency Management Association) and depended more on ourselves. The Pierre Janet Award for Clinical Excellence
The International Society of Hypnosis (ISH) is the premier international organization for health professionals (physicians, psychologists, dentists, researchers) who study and practice clinical hypnosis. ISH has branches in nearly two dozen countries across six continents. The Society holds a tri-annual meeting featuring presentations of the latest research findings and clinical applications. In October of 2004, the meeting was held in Singapore. During that meeting, the ISH Award Committee met and chose its 2003 recipient for one of the Society’s highest honors, the one person in the world regarded by the committee as most influencing the clinical practice of hypnosis for the better. Dr. Yapko is pleased and honored to have been chosen to receive this special Lifetime Achievement award, called the Pierre Janet Award for Clinical Excellence . It is named for the 19th century French physician and psychiatrist Pierre Marie Felix Janet, who was influential in bringing about in France and the United States a deeper understanding of the nature of hypnosis and its role in treatment.
    The award reads as follows:
"The International Society of Hypnosis presents the Pierre Janet Award for Clinical Excellence to Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D., whose lifetime of published clinical experience substantially advances the understanding of the uses of hypnosis in obtaining effective results in clinical practice."

    National Traffic Signal Report Card
The National Transportation Operations Coalition (NTOC), a group of transportation associations interested in improving transportation operations and FHWA, developed a traffic signal operations self assessment tool as part of a national effort to bring more attention to the need for effective traffic signal operations. Agencies that complete the self assessment can benchmark their current practices and gain insight into areas needing improvement. The self assessment was sent to public agencies nationwide with a responsibility for traffic signal operations. 378 responses from public agencies in 49 States were received, representing about one-third of the traffic signals in the nation. On April 20, 2005, the National Traffic Signal Report Card was released by the NTOC in a media event in Washington , DC. The Report Card consists of the composite national scores from the self assessment responses in five sub areas and indicates an overall national "grade" of 62 out of 100 or D-. However, the Report Card also describes actions necessary to raise the composite score to the "A" level and concludes that a relatively small level of investment (less than $1 billion nationally per year) is necessary to achieve this level of improvement. A copy of the Executive Summary of the report outlining the National Report Card results along with a complete technical report can be accessed below or from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) web site.
