Kiskiack Lesson Plan (Fall 2000)
The name "Kiskiack" is a Virginian Algonquian word for a village site and small Powhatan tribal group located on the present day Naval Weapons Station at Yorktown, Virginia. Kiskiack is also the name of a very early 18th century brick building located on the Naval Weapons Station at Yorktown. This brick structure, which is the oldest building owned by the U.S. Navy, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Download the Lesson Plan (PDF)
Supporting the Searchers Lesson Plan (Winter 2000)
During the dark early years of World War II, Norfolk Naval Air Station played a vital role in turning the tide of the Battle for the Atlantic. With German submarines sinking ships just off the American coast almost at will, the U.S. Navy urgently needed to expanded their seaplane and air patrol facilities here in Hampton Roads. In 1942, the Navy built Seaplane Hangars 1 and 2 to help house a Fleet Air Wing which was organized to patrol for and find the enemy submarines. These hanger facilities enabled the Navy to maintain a seaplane force, which had by 1944 helped drive the German submarines from American waters. Download the Lesson Plan (PDF) HRNM Home

It may seem like yesterday that our nation was on edge, waiting for an announcement of war with Iraq. Now the war is over, Saddam Hussein has been removed from power, and the people of Iraq are struggling to rebuild their war-torn land. A lot has happened in a few short months, and this Special Report will help you and your students put it all in perspective. The mini-lessons that follow focus on three key areas: In Lesson 1, students will work at understanding the key points (or "main ideas") of the recent current events. In Lesson 2, they will use a crossword puzzle to identify important details in the news, and in Lesson 3, they will get a look at the historical context of the tensions with Iraq.

    Objectives Students will:
    • Identify important issues that persist in modern American history.
    • See the connection between historical issues and current events.

Materials and Resources In developing our lessons and activities, we made some assumptions about the hardware and software that would be available in the classroom for teachers who visit the LETSNet Website. We assume that teachers using our Internet-based lessons or activities have a computer with the necessary hardware components (mouse, keyboard, and monitor) as well as a World Wide Web browser. In the section below, we specify any "special" hardware or software requirements for a lesson or activity (in addition to those described above) and the level of Internet access required to do the activity.
  • Special hardware requirements: None.

    Guide to Finding Lesson Plans
The Education and Social Science Library has many materials containing lesson plans, primarily in the form of curriculum guides, in both print and microfiche formats. According to the Facts on File Dictionary of Education , a curriculum guide differs from a lesson plan in that it includes "one or more aspects of curriculum and instruction, such as philosophy, policies, aims, objectives, subject matter, resources and processes" (p.138), while a lesson plan "includes the instructional objectives and methods for a particular functional unit or period of instruction" (p.271). Many lesson plans are embedded within the curriculum guides. The following is an explanation of several ways to locate lesson plans and other teaching materials on a particular topic in the Education and Social Science Library. Please direct all comments or requests for information to Nancy O'Brien.
