Home About Raven Hill Classes / Workshops Community Resource ... Classes / Workshops Turning Clay to Silver Mary Ann Devos, Master Teacher and Director of Education for PMC Connection, will present two consecutive workshops in August. She will start with a three-day Level One Certification class at Raven Hill Discovery Center on October 13, 14 and 15, 2005 from 9 am to 5 pm each day. This class will present the basic techniques for using Precious Metal Clay in all four forms: clay, paste, syringe and sheet. With a total of eight projects, the participants will learn how to create jewelry pieces using this amazing material. Then a three-day Level Two Certification class will be offered at Raven Hill Discovery Center on October 16, 17 and 18, 2005 from 9 am to 5 pm each day.
Precious Metal Clay is a non-toxic combination of pure silver powder, a cellulose binder and water. The material works and feels like ceramic clay. Simply form a piece with the material, dry it and clean it to remove any rough areas. Then fire the piece, usually in a small jewelry kiln. The heat of the firing burns away the binder and causes the silver powder to fuse. The result is solid silver.
Devos is a nationally and internationally recognized PMC teacher. She has worked with PMC since 1996 and has presented PMC classes across the US as well as in Europe, Canada, South Africa, Japan and Australia. She has written two books on PMC, Introduction to Precious Metal Clay and Precious Metal Clay in Mixed Media, both published by Wardell Publications.

Playing the game is easy: Once kids find the required item or items, they must then write down the source of their news (newspaper and page number, television network, online service, etc.). This activity is particularly well suited to weekends (when you are catching up on the news yourself) or holidays, as it will often require an hour or so to complete. KidsHealth
Parents Positive Parenting Talking to Kids
Although news gleaned from television, radio, or the Internet can be a positive educational experience for kids, problems can arise when the images presented are violent or news stories touch on disturbing topics. Recent news about Hurricane Katrina could potentially make a child worry that a hurricane is going to hit home, or be fearful of a part of daily life - like rain and thunderstorms - that he or she never even thought about before. Reports on subjects such as natural disasters, child abductions, homicides, terrorist attacks, school violence, or a politician's sex life can teach kids to view the world as a confusing, threatening, or unfriendly place. How can you deal with these disturbing stories and images? Talking to your child about what he or she watches or hears will help your child put frightening information into a more balanced and reasonable context. How Kids Perceive the News
Unlike movies or entertainment programs, news is real. But depending on your child's age or maturity level, he or she may not yet understand the distinctions between fact and fantasy. By the time a child reaches 7 or 8, however, what he or she watches on TV can seem all too real. For some youngsters, the vividness of a sensational news story can be internalized and transformed into something that might happen to them. A child watching a news story about a bombing on a bus or a subway might worry, "Could I be next? Could that happen to me?"

Conversations With History An unusual original source site. The University of California at Berkeley sponsors a weekly radio show interviewing a variety of people about their lives and their work. Guests include diplomats, statesmen, and soldiers; economists and political analysts; scientists and historians; writers and foreign correspondents; activists and artists. The video files (you'll need the current RealMedia player) are arranged by date of broadcast but can also be searched by name and keywords. A transcript of each interview is also available on the site making it easier to find the parts of each program that are most relevant. CRAYON Sorry, this has nothing to do with coloring pictures. CRAYON stands for CReate Your Own Newspaper and that's exactly what this site allows you to do. You start with some basic stuff like the title and style of layout you want your paper to have. Then choose the subject areas you'd like in your paper (or choose Quick Paper to get a "well rounded" paper. In either case you can always go back and edit the paper later. Once completed, bookmark your paper and then return each day to read it. Your paper doesn't actually have the text of the stories, only links to the major online news sources doing the reporting. Although the site works very well, it does require a working email address to register and make changes to the paper. The owners of the site say they only use the addresses to periodically send a message about what's new at CRAYON. This is a fun way to get your kids looking at current events.

At first glance, it might seem like the only way to deal with the news is to shut it out entirely. While deciding what's appropriate for your children to see and know is your own decision, it's important to remember that all news isn't bad news. The media highlights the unusual, and what often makes an event unusual (in the eyes of the media, anyway) is that it involves violence, crime, or tragedy. On top of that, the demands of our most popular news medium, television, require that these unusual stories be told very quickly. According to Children Now, a nonprofit children's advocacy group, the average television news story is told in just two minutes.

Why is it important to talk with your kids about what they see on the news?
As adults, we depend on "The News" as our primary source for information about the world we live in. Whether it's the local newspaper, nightly TV newscasts, cable news networks, news radio, or Web sites, graphic footage and accounts of the latest happenings in the world are being delivered right into our homes 24 hours a day. This constant barrage can be overwhelming for adults, but it can be especially confusing and frightening for young children. Many adults do not realize how many kids actually watch TV news or read the newspaper. In addition, consider the opportunities kids have to be exposed to the news. Maybe you listen to news radio in the morning while you drive the kids to school. Perhaps you read the newspaper at the breakfast table. Remember, while you're reading an article on page seven, your kids may be staring at the front page headlines. You might watch the evening news while helping your kids with their homework. Or they may be exposed to a "newsflash" during their favorite sit-com. Even if you avoid exposing your kids to the news, they still get the latest news accounts from their peers.
