Field Guide to Parenting
... Solutions A to Z Exposing Your Kids to Current Events
"Parents really don't have a choice about whether or not to expose their children to current events," says Linda Ellerbee, a 25-year veteran of broadcast journalism and producer, host, and writer of NICK NEWS , a weekly children's news show on Nickelodeon, the cable network. "It isn't a question of whether kids want to know what's going on in the world or whether you want them to know," says Ellerbee. "It's a question of whether or not kids can avoid knowing. In today's world, they can't. And they need information in a context that makes sense to them." Ellerbee's show gives kids that information weekly, and she says her approach, summarized below, is one that parents can use when watching the news with their own kids. Break down a large story into manageable pieces. "The problem with watching grown-up news is that the stories are all based on prior knowledge. A kid's show can't do thatyou have to give them the background to understand what's going on. If we say something has happened since the cold war ended, we have to explain what the cold war was." Parents can help kids understand complex storieslike Bosniaby providing this background to their kids, says Ellerbee. Show both sides of stories, especially those that may appear, to children, to have an obvious solution. Ellerbee calls these the "see what you think" stories. "Take the issue of the disappearing Florida panther. It's being killed off because humans moving into the area are taking over the lands that the panther needs to survive. It's a cute panther, but if you set aside the land to save the panther, where do you put new schools and homes? What if your family were moving there?" Kids will eventually need to make such decisions, says Ellerbee, and parents can help by providing the other side of the argument (even if it is not one they support) when discussing news.

Current Events Project
Current events always spark the interests of G/T students. We talk about a few current events and zero in on one that sparks the most interest. The students listen to the news, get on the internet and read the newpaper. (This is mostly done at home, but can be done at school, also.) Soon newspaper clippings, internet research, etc. are brought to school. The kids will greet you in the morning with-"did you see the news last night.. I especially like this "current events project" because the students direct it and it takes off in what ever the direction...

We all want our children to get their vitamins and minerals, but having a penny dissolve in their stomach is not a good way to get your child his recommended daily requirements of zinc. A new article in the March issue of the journal Pediatrics describes a toddler who had an xray done because of a fever and cough, on which his doctors found a coin lodged in his esophagus. The coin was taken out and found to be an eroding and dissolving penny, which had caused irritation in his esosphagus and which could have led to a perforation or rupture. The fact that pennies are now made mostly from zinc and they can dissolve in a child's stomach because of the reaction between the acid and zinc was first reported in 1998. Although previously made from copper, in 1982, pennies began being minted from mostly zinc with a very thin copper coating. Copper pennies were too expensive to make and the best alternative was thought to be zinc. Aluminum, although also inexpensive, was thought to not be safe, because if children swallowed them, they wouldn't show up on xray.

I've often been lauded for my tendency to avoid the limelight and pass credit for my many projects to others. My motivation in this is not a sense of humility nor a noble one...it is a matter of self-preservation. I've frequently stated that "Once you become recognized and people know who you are, you become a moving target." A sad fact of life in American society is that Today's hero is tomorrow's villain. Americans love a success story...poor boy makes good...for it reminds us that America is the Land of Opportunity a place where any common man or woman can achieve beyond their wildest dreams. But once the success story is told, we tend to thrive on the scandal that brings our heroes back down to earth. If the average man is arrested for DUI or family violence, it is scarcely noted in the media. But let an American hero make such a mistake and it becomes front page news. I say all this to illustrate a similar situation common to all Veterans in general. During the recent hunt for the Washington, DC area sniper, news media conjecture repeatedly looked for a military connection to the killer. When at last a suspect was captured, the military connection became the focal point of a society that loves the military man when he is fighting on foreign soil, but quickly turns against him when he comes home.

Flipped off the lights in a school bathroom as a joke? PrObably not, if you go to school in Toledo, Ohio. After all, kids there can end up in jail for pulling those kinds of stunts! According to the city's safe-school ordinance, kids who do anything from disrupting class to assaulting a teacher can be charged with a misdemeanor. Some students may even spend time in a juvenile detention center if their crime is severe enough.

Help your students bring out the best in themselves by helping others. Use these ideas as a guide to develop a Make A Difference Day project that addresses community needs, improves teamwork and fosters goal-setting. Even the youngest kids can get involved. We offer plenty of suggestions from the simple to the ambitious. Aspects of your project may occur during the school week, but remember that a significant part of the work must take place on Make A Difference Day, a Saturday. For example, collect games and other items for a toy closet at a local hospital pediatrics ward; arrange to deliver the items on the Day.
