Chad is rich in natural resources, and the recent discovery of large oil deposits has created great enthusiasm for the country's future economic development. Parade for Opening of Hospital and Bridge, Sarh Photo courtesy of Africa Focus A combination of the colonial history of Chad and a strong Islamic influence has led to two official national languages: French and Arabic. Approximately 50 percent of Chad's ethnically diverse population is Muslim.
Chad's education system is based on the French model, making French the primary language of instruction in most higher education institutions. The University of N'Djamena is the country's main university, comprised of three faculties: the Faculty of Law and Economics, the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, and the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences.

Illegal immigrants affected by Hurricane Katrina should have "protected humanitarian status," representatives of Latin American and Caribbean communities said Tuesday in an appeal to the White House. The groups said the protection is needed because immigrants fearing deportation, including some with U.S.-born children, are not seeking help at shelters because officials are asking for Social Security numbers in order to enter. "The immigrants are the invisible victims of the hurricane," said Gloria Saucedo, of Hermandad Mexicana of Los Angeles, Calif., whose group is a member of the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities, which is pushing for immigration...

    Purpose of this Guide
This guide provides basic information on links to Internet sites that provide information from the government. It also describes how to access government documents available in Paley Library and elsewhere.
    Locating U.S. Government Links
The U.S. Government has put about 60% of its new documents on the Internet as of late 2001. Commercial search engines are often the best way to locate the documents that are on the Internet. One particularly good search engine for this is Google unclesam . The directory at GovSpot is also useful for finding federal and state sites, and Stateline for state political news.
To find older versions of web pages, or Web pages of administrations no longer in office, try using CyberCemetery or the Wayback Machine from the Internet Archive. (A list of pages removed for security concerns since the events of 9/11 can be found at the watchdog organization site OMB Watch Sometimes, using a database offers a more systematic way to start if you are baffled at where to start.
