Topics in International Relations
This course will enable regular or visiting faculty members to examine topics in International Relations not treated in the established curriculum. Subjects may therefore vary each time the course is offered.
East Asian Security: Theory and Practice
This course introduces and applies theories of international relations to inform contemporary debates about major security issues in East Asia.  After examining the historical background necessary to understand current events within the region, we will focus on China's emergence as a great power and the regional and global impact; the stability of deterrence in the Taiwan Strait; Japan's security strategy (its roots and future directions); the North Korean nuclear crisis, and the prospects and regional implications of Korean unification; disputes over history and calls for atonement from Japan's past victims of war and colonization; and U.S. security policy toward the region.  The course also examines the development of potentially pacifying trends such as East Asian institution-building, economic integration, and democratization.
Globalization and International Politics
In this course, we will explore how economic globalization (that is, recent shifts in the structure of international trade, finance, and production) is shaping international relations. Special emphasis will be placed on the changing role of multinational corporations. The course begins with an overview of economic globalization and then turns to analyze how it is influencing the political world. Is globalization likely to make the world more peaceful? Will globalization significantly reduce the power of the nation state? Will globalization lead to a single world culture? How will globalization affect the environment? How stable is globalization? Does globalization lead to increased inequality among and between nations? These are some of the central questions that we will explore. While there are not yet clear answers as to exactly how economic globalization influences world politics, grasping the key issues involved in these debates is essential to understanding today's world.

Macro Real Property Tax System ... Sites of Interest Government/Politics Macro Scan February 2004 This section is intended to provide an overview of the government framework within which the Agency operates. Because the government agenda is inherently responsive to a variety of "outside" forces, an integral part of this section of the environmental scan involves a general awareness of what are sometimes referred to as "current events." The various links provided herein should help enable one to stay abreast of "what's happening" in the broader government/political arena on an ongoing, and up-to-the-minute basis. Clearly, the information that follows here can never hope to be complete, but is intended to facilitate further "do-it-yourself" scanning efforts.
The following link provides a flowchart of the mysterious process by which a bill becomes a Law in New York State. (Those who attended public schools in New York may already have this depiction somewhere deep in memory (c. 7th grade)!)
"How a Bill Becomes a Law"
Agency staff make continuous efforts to monitor developments with respect to all RPT/ORPS related legislation pending in either House of the Legislature. These efforts focus on daily review of the summaries of each legislative bill as it's introduced. Bills of interest are identified and added to a computerized bill tracking file that is maintained using the Legislative Retrieval System (LRS) software, which is only available by subscription to the Legislative Bill Drafting Commission. At this point in the current session, we are tracking nearly 2,000 bills of interest.

Introduction to California Government and Politics
Professor Braunwarth

The State Capitol in Sacramento (photo by M. McKenzie) Although most of us are more familiar with national government and politics, it is arguable government and politics on a state and local level that will ultimately have a greater impact on your daily life. California plays a particularly key role in American politics as a result of our large size, our diverse land and people, and our innovative and visible attempts to address the challenges we face. In this course we will approach California state and local politics through the lenses of current events and issues which we face. Required Texts: Davis, Mayhew, and Miller. Under the Perfect Sun: The San Diego Tourists Never See New Press, Lawrence, David G. California: The Politics of Diversity . 3rd Edition. Wadsworth, 2003. Articles supplementing the texts will be assigned throughout the semester. These articles are required reading and can be found on reserve or linked from the course web page. As we will be examining course material that is immediately relevant to current events, you must remain current with state and local politics. This material will appear on occasional quizzes (below).
