Join Socialist Alternative is a national organization fighting in our workplaces, communities, and campuses against the exploitation and injustices people face every day. We are union activists fighting for workers' rights and militant, democratic labor unions; we are people of color speaking out against racism, students organizing against sweatshops and war, immigrants demanding papers for all undocumented workers, women and men fighting sexism and homophobia.
We campaign for the building of a mass workers' party to represent the interests of workers, youth and the environment against the two parties of big business.
We see the global capitalist system as the root cause of terrorism, war, poverty, discrimination, and environmental destruction. As capitalism moves deeper into crisis and recession, a new generation of workers and youth must join together to take the top 500 corporations into public ownership. We believe the dictatorships that existed in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe were perversions of what socialism is really about. We are for democratic socialism where people will have control over their daily lives.
Socialist Alternative is in political solidarity with the Committee for a Workers' International, a worldwide socialist organization in 35 countries on every continent.

Ispra Workshop on Ammonium Nitrate Workshop on " AMMONIUM NITRATE " 30 January – 1 February 2002, Ispra/Italy Background At the end of January 2002 the Major Accident Hazard Bureau of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy hosted a workshop on ammonium nitrate. The workshop was specifically convened to address concerns raised about current practice relative to prevention of ammonium nitrate incidents following the catastrophic incident on 21 st September at the Grande Paroisse site in Toulouse, France. The incident killed 30 people, 8 of which were outside the establishment, and injured over 2,500 - a number of them very seriously – and caused material damage provisionally thought to be between € 1.5 and 2.3 billion. The purpose of the workshop was to review existing theory and practices for preventing industrial incidents involving ammonium nitrate with the view to strengthening existing prevention practices and policies. Approximately 90 representatives of government and industry attended the workshop, representing over 20 different countries. Representatives from fourteen Member States attended the meeting. Additionally, there were representatives from Norway, Switzerland, two accession countries (Estonia and Lithuania), Canada and the United States. Participation was fairly evenly divided between government and industry, and also included specialists from academia and research organisations. Experts in both the fertiliser and explosives industries were present.

The Gambia Catholic Relief Services is committed to improving the food security in rural households and among vulnerable groups in The Gambia. Many of CRS' current program efforts and investments reflect innovations directed toward the development of a five-year joint Senegal/Gambia program. The program builds on existing economic, cultural, and family linkages between Senegal and The Gambia, and aims to improve the market for sesame and provide resources to vulnerable populations. In this way, CRS seeks to make the most of limited resources and to address needs that are relevant in both The Gambia and Senegal.
CRS has also taken a regional approach to addressing HIV/AIDS, not only by supporting its church partners' contributions to national efforts, but also by linking partners between countries. An HIV/AIDS strategy has been developed which includes Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. This strategy focuses on developing techniques to reduce the stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS by involving youth in peer counseling activities, educating CRS staff about prevention and transmission of the illness, providing community care for people living with AIDS, and advocating for children affected by AIDS. CRS supports the Home Based Care and Counseling project in The Gambia, which provides services and information through local community groups.

The long history of growing plants in containers is documented in the writing and painting of various ancient civilizations, including the Egyptian, the Hindu, the Greek, and the Roman. But it appears that the ancient Chinese were the first to miniaturize trees for ornamental purposes, around A.D. 200. From China, the practice spread to Japan, probably during the Heian period (782-1185). During the peaceful and prosperous Tokugawa period of Japanese history (1603-1867), landscape gardening attained new importance. Many of the great Japanese gardens that exist today were established then, when the cultivation of native Japanese plants such as azaleas and maples was a pastime of the wealthy. Growing dwarf plants in containers was also popular, but by modern bonsai standards the container plants of the Tokugawa period were too large and their containers too deep. In this period, the term used for dwarf potted trees was hachi-no-ki , meaning "a tree in a pot." The term
