September 13 The Red Cross requires a three-week hitch, getting me back two days too late for my calendar. FEMA doesn't want help . I'm told that there are organizations across the country who are looking for volunteers to help with all manner of aid for Katrina victims. I just need a floor to sleep on and three squares, and I'll work 18 hours days feeding dogs or helping people fill out paperwork or cook food or whatever. Can anybody point me to some such organizations?

The famous chalkers from today include Tony Benn, Alain de Botton, Raymond Blanc, Brian Eno, Nicholas Grimshaw, Richard Harries, Michael Heath, Glenda Jackson, Lisa Jardine, Joanna MacGregor, Robert May, Cornelia Parker, Chris Patten, Martin Rees, Bobby Robson, Jon Snow and Richard Wentworth. From 16 April until 18 September A web version of the exhibition is available on this site.

    The Good Coffeehouse Music Parlor
    Fridays, 8pm
    Current Coffeehouse Schedule:
A day and a half of workshops, jamming and concerts of traditional American music.
So, there are still people who think that authentic, old-school bluegrass music can't be made in New York City? Clearly, they haven't heard . With critically acclaimed albums, a touring schedule that runs from Maine to South Carolina to James's home state of Kentucky to Wisconsin, and a growing dossier of magazine and newspaper articles about them, including feature articles in the major bluegrass magazines, this is bluegrass music the way it should be played and the way you have to hear it. The band will be playing songs from their new CD, Troubled Times, and will have copies of that CD and their new DVD, which features the Jamboree (and other good stuff).
The only event of its kind in the Northeast, this is the place to play and hear the best in old-time and bluegrass music. Workshops (harmony singing, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo and more) start at 12:30, jamming goes on all day, evening showcase concerts start at 6pm all for $4 (yup, four dollars). Bring your acoustic instrument (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, stand-up bass, banjo or Dobro) (or if you don't play an instrument, bring your ears), bring your love of American traditional music, bring your kids, bring your friends. If you haven't ever heard the ring of a banjo and the chop of a mandolin echoing through the hills and hollers of Park Slope, then you've missed one of this city's delightful incongruities.
