The Coalition Provisional Authority offers information and FAQ on the introduction of the new national currency known as the new Iraqi dinar .
http://www.cpa-iraq.org/budget/IraqCurrencyExchange.html
Iraq Currency Exchange
Starting on October 15 th 2003 a new national currency known as the ‘new Iraqi dinar’ will begin to replace the existing currency, the ‘old dinar’, and the currency used in the North of Iraq, the ‘swiss dinar’. The new Iraqi dinar will create a single unified currency that is used throughout all of Iraq and will also make money more convenient to use in people’s everyday lives. The currency exchange will last from October 15 th 2003 to January 15 th Currency can be exchanged at any time during this three month period. Locations where money can be exchanged will include banks and other official locations, for example post offices, throughout Iraq. No fees will be charged for exchanging currency. The conversion rates for new Iraqi dinars will be as follows:
  • one ‘old dinar’ will be exchanged for one new Iraqi dinar; one unit of the ‘swiss’ dinar will be exchanged for 150 new Iraqi dinars.
Bank accounts and financial contracts in Swiss dinars will also be converted at the rate of 150 new Iraqi dinars for every one Swiss dinar. Bank accounts and contracts in old Iraqi dinar will not change.

123. S-WoPEc: Economic Structure And The Decision To Adopt A Common Currency
Extensively examines the question of whether given countries should adopt a common currency like the Euro
http://swopec.hhs.se/iiessp/abs/iiessp0611.htm
Seminar Papers, Institute for International Economic Studies, Stockholm University
No 611:
Economic Structure and the Decision to Adopt a Common Currency
Jeffrey A. Frankel and Andrew K. Rose Abstract: Everyone studying EMU cites the theory of Optimum Currency Areas: whether a country like Sweden should join the currency union depends on such parameters as the extent of Swedish trade with other EU members and the correlation of Sweden’s income with that of other members. Few economists have focused on what we consider one of the most interesting aspects of this issue. Trade patterns and income correlations are endogenous. Sweden could fail the OCA criterion for membership today, and yet, if it goes ahead and joins anyway, could, as the result of joining, pass the Optimum Currency Area (OCA) criterion in the future. (Further, even if Sweden does not enter EMU quickly, it will be more likely to satisfy the OCA criteria in the future as a result of its recent accession to the EU.) The few economists who have identified the importance of the endogeneity of trade patterns and income correlation are divided on the nature of the relationship between the two. This is an important empirical question, which may hold the key to the answer regarding whether it is in Sweden’s interest to join EMU.

Europe's leaders hail new currency
The euro is being launched simultaneously in 12 countries BRUSSELS, Belgium Politicians joined the public across Europe in greeting the launch of the continent's new currency. The introduction of the euro on New Year's Day in 12 European countries marked the largest currency swap in history. Leading the praise was Pope John Paul, whose Vatican City mini-state joined Italy in switching to the euro. The pope congratulated the Europe Union, saying: "I hope that this may favour the full development of the citizens ... and that justice and solidarity may flourish." Romano Prodi, president of the EU's executive Commission said: "We have given an example of real change in freedom and democracy. The new Europe will be something big in the world." Welcome to the new home of the ORB on the web!
The ORB has moved to its new home at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York.
Unfortunately, its name has changed, since we can no longer use our old address.
The new address, as of 2004, is
http://the-orb.net
There is also a new search engine on most of the pages which should facilitate finding what you want quickly.
Your old bookmarks should work, with an important change: Make sure that all the filenames in your bookmarks are in lower case letters and that you remove the old address "orb.rhodes.edu" from the path. For example, an address of one of the internal ORB bookmarks should look like this:
with all filenames in lower case. The old paths are still there, so if you are having trouble locating a page, it is probably due to the fact that you are missing either "the-orb.net" or your filenames have upper case letters.
The new Editor is Kathryn Talarico, who can be reached at
