Panama Currency History
For nearly 300 years, the stone paved, Camino Real , connect Panama on the Pacific coast to Porto Bello , on the Caribbean was the highway, over which most of Spain's commerce passed. At one time, Porto Bello was the most important commercial city for the Spanish New World. Traders came from Spain with all good from all over Europe, to trade with the American merchants from Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua. When the Treasure Fleet arrived in Porto Bello, there was a fair, that would last up to 40 days, as the traders went about there business. The population of Porto Bello would swell, as thousand converged in the city. While slaves unloaded the merchandize brought from Europe, others were loading the native products; gold, silver, cotton, tobacco, cocoa, etc., into the Royal Treasury Building. The gold and silver ingot were stacked in large piles, like firewood. Just before the Fleet arrived in Porto Bello, the government would start moving all of the goods stored in Panama, by mule train across the isthmus. Besides all of the merchants, the town will fill with the hundreds of mule skinners, slaves, etc, that was used to transport the treasures to Porto Bello. When all the trading and negotiations were completed, the goods were loaded on the ships, for transport back to Spain.

A currency is a unit of exchange, facilitating the transfer of goods and services. It is a form of money, where money is defined as a medium of exchange rather than e.g. a store of value. A currency zone is a country or region in which a specific currency is the dominant medium of exchange. To facilitate trade between currency zones, there are exchange rates i.e. prices at which currencies (and the goods and services of individual currency zones) can be exchanged against each other. Modern currencies can be classified as either floating currencies or fixed currencies based on their exchange rate regime. In cases where a country does have control of its own currency, that control is exercised either by a Central Bank or by a Ministry of Finance. In either case, the institution that has control of monetary policy is referred to as the monetary authority. Monetary authorities have varying degrees of autonomy from the governments that create them. In the United States, the Federal Reserve operates with full independence from the government. It is important to note that a monetary authority is created and supported by its sponsoring government, so independence can be reduced or revoked by legislative fiat. In almost all Western countries, the monetary authority is largely independent from the government.

Currency History: Sacagawea and the golden dollar
The new golden dollar coin features Sacagawea, a Native American Indian. She was captured at the age of 10 and produced a son at the age of 14. Information on her historical importance.
Were you one of the many people that purchased the new golden dollar coin? Did you really take a good look at the person on the coin? The portrait you see on the coin is “Sacagawea”, the Native American woman. Sacagawea was born in Idaho and was a Shoshone Native American. While she was picking berries with other Shoshone women, she was captured by Hidatsa warriors. This capture took place in 1800. She was probably about 10 years old. The Minitari braves traded her repeatedly. Sacagawea was sold to Toussaint Charbonneau. Toussaint was a Canadian fur trapper. He won her in a gamble. Believe it or not, Charbonneau already had a wife when he won her. It has been written that his wife was probably a common-law wife. Sacagawea, at the age of 14, married Charbonneau. Within a few months Sacagawea was pregnant. Lewis and Clark hired Toussaint as an interpreter and a guide. Since Sacagawea, a teenage bride, was married to Toussaint and also expecting a child, she had to be included in the Lewis and Clark expedition. Because Sacagawea was expecting a child within a few months, the tribes figured the Lewis and Clark expedition was not an aggressive party. To the tribes she was a sign of peace and has been referred to as ‘a living white flag’.

    History
At 1.00 p.m. on 1st. January 1901, in Sydney, after the Australian states had begrudgingly agreed to relinquish some of their sovereign powers in the common interest, the new Commonwealth of Australia was created when Australia's first Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun gave the oath of allegiance to Prime Minister, Edmund Barton before a crowd of 150,000 in Centennial Park in sweltering heat. The new Federal Government had been formed on 25th. December 1900, and was to reside in Melbourne, the temporary Federal capital of Australia, until a more suitable site was found. The Federal Parliament was officially opened by the Duke of Cornwall and York, (later King George V) on 9th.May 1901, in front of 14,000 invited guests in Melbourne's Exhibition Building amongst public disquiet in regard to the sky-rocketing costs of the celebrations. During the many conventions held prior to federation, the state Premiers had made the decision to authorise the new Federal Government to issue a uniform currency which, amongst other things, reflected our standing as an individual nation and no longer a collection of colonies subject to direct British rule.It took another nine years before the scheme actually got under way.
