Virtual gaming's elusive exchange rates
Published: August 5, 2005, 7:18 AM PDT By Daniel Terdiman
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
TrackBack Print E-mail TalkBack In the world of online fantasy games, you can always buy more virtual assets if you've got a real-life credit card. If you happen to find yourself short of fantasy gold pieces for the purchase of that battle hammer in the game "World of Warcraft," for example, you can surf to one of the many third-party Web sites trafficking in "World of Warcraft" gold, pull out your credit card and exchange real dollars for fantasy coinage. News.context
What's new:
People who play online fantasy games routinely buy and sell fantasy-game currencies and other cyber-game assets using real dollars, sometimes on Web sites hosted by the game developers, sometimes on third-party sites. Bottom line:
Because there is no regulator controlling exchange rates for virtual currencies, rates vary widely from site to site, making market prices for virtual currencies difficult to track. These micro-economies fascinate academics, who point out that as the volume of virtual-currency trades increases, so will the tax implications, which may eventually force the exchanges to regulate their pricing.

China's yuan revaluation starts another stage of US dollar demise worldwide
Other Asian states will gradually reduce the purchase of American dollars after the start of the yuan-revaluating process China announced the start of the process to revaluate the yuan the day before yesterday. Both international financial organizations and central trade partners, the USA, EU and Japan, first and foremost, were eagerly waiting for this news from the Chinese administration for many years. American, European and Japanese financiers believed that the underestimated rate of the Chinese national currency allowed China to artificially reduce production costs and the costs of its export products. China's decision apparently became a signal for other countries of South-East Asia to launch freer currency policies. Malaysia followed China's example and announced about the extension of the corridor for the national currency floating rate just an hour later.

U.S. could be hit hard if world loses faith in dollar
June 19, 2003 BY TERRY SAVAGE SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST I should have put my money where my mouth is. In February I wrote a column about hedging your bets on the dollar by purchasing foreign currency CDs at Everbank.com. At the time the euro was trading about one-to-one with the dollar. Today, it takes nearly $1.20 to buy one Euro. So when I leave for Europe today, everything will cost 20 percent more! There are a couple of lessons here. No. 1 is that I'll have to shop 20 percent less to stick to my budget. That's what I get for not practicing what I preach. But since this trip isn't a shopping spree, this column will stick to lesson No. 2: the importance of the dollar as a global currency and the need to maintain confidence in its value. Lately the headlines have been full of talk about the "falling dollar." It's an abstract concept unless you're leaving the country. But, in theory, a falling dollar means that everything we import should cost more because foreign businesses raise prices to offset the lower value of the dollars they receive in payment. And the stuff that American companies sell to foreigners should appear to them as a bargain, because their stronger euro will buy more U.S.-made products.

Monetarism and the Silent Explosion
Is inflation merely a matter of printing too much money?
"There is an additional factor, 'real' as opposed to 'financial', which helps to explain the sustained strength of worldwide inflationary forces and yet remains unmentioned in most modern works on money and inflation, viz the pressure of a rapidly expanding world population on finite resources - virtually a silent explosion as far as monetarist literature is concerned. Thus nowhere in Friedman's powerful, popular and influential book Free to Choose is there any mention of the population problem, nor the slightest hint that the inflation on which he is acknowledged to be the world's greatest expert might in any way be caused by the rapidly rising potential and real demands of the thousands of millions born into the world since he began his researches." The quotation above is from page 5 of the book by Glyn Davies discussing the entire time span of recorded monetary history: Davies, Glyn. A

Emerging technologies promise to keep unemployment a major issue, even if all Western economies get out of recession. By 2010, China will introduce as much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as the entire world does today. And community breakdown is one of the most systemic, deep, and complex societal trends of the past 30 years, with no signs of any reversal. Precisely because we will have to live with these issues for the foreseeable future, only a long-term structural approach can successfully resolve these problems. Here I show how community currencies could contribute to tackling all three problems and also permit us to "retrofit" economic motivation to desirable human behavior.
