sportscotland announce funding to curling ahead of Winter Olympics
Body Text Thursday 16 June 2005 With the countdown to the 2006 Winter Olympics well underway, Patricia Ferguson today announced that sport scotland has awarded £351,181 to the Royal Caledonian Curling Club (RCCC). The backing is a combination of £241,181 from the sport scotland Lottery Fund and £110,000 of sport scotland Exchequer funding from the Scottish Executive. Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson said: "This significant investment reflects Scottish curling’s enhanced reputation in recent years, from when our women’s teams dominated the 2002 Winter Olympics and World Championships and to the excellent results our athletes have achieved on the world stage this year. "The money will benefit all areas of the sport, including athlete support, coaching and staffing and will help increase participation numbers, as well as supporting elite our very best performers in preparation for the Winter Olympics next year." The sport of curling has established itself as the most successful UK Winter Olympic Sport, in terms of winning medals. It is one of the key core sports within the Scottish Institute of Sport, with Scottish curlers regularly performing on the world and Olympic stage. The focus for the elite Scottish curlers this year is to book their place on Team GB for Turin, Italy, next year.

The quality of the Winter Olympics is diminished by Sport Inflation. It had been happening for a while, but in 1998 I finally realized they'd gone too far. The IOC wants the winter games to rake in more sponsorship money, so they're adding events that don't deserve it. For the good of the human race, we must remove these lesser faux-sports and send them back to the minor leagues.
What is an "Olympic" sport?

Minnesota at the Winter Olympics

In Bemidji, curling is queen
By Tom Robertson
Minnesota Public Radio
January 31, 2002 RealAudio If there is a curling capital in Minnesota, it may well be the city of Bemidji. The winter sport took hold there in the 1930s, and the community has embraced it ever since. In the past two decades, Bemidji has produced 20 national championship teams. This year, two Bemidji sisters - coached by their dad - will compete in Salt Lake City for Olympic gold. Kari Erickson is the "skip," or leader, of the U.S. women's Olympic curling team. Erickson, of Bemidji, is joined on the team by her sister Stacey Liapis, Debbie McCormick of Madison, Wis. and Ann Swisshelm of Chicago. See more photos of the Erickson team.
