IIDB II General Discussion Forums PDA View Full Version : Olympic Sports ex-idaho February 6, 2002, 06:38 PM I heard a story on NPR today that really irritated me. The International Olympic Committee is considering making Bridge a Olympic sport. They said it was not likely but why should it even be considered?
In the past dozen or so years we have seen ballroom dancing, chess, curling, surfing, snowboarding and many other marginal sports added to the roster. Do any of you feel that maybe they are going overboard?
I recognize the skill and hard work that it takes to be competitive in any of these pursuits. I am not questioning that. I just feel that perhaps we have strayed to far from the origin of the games. Sakpo February 6, 2002, 06:46 PM The Olympics added male synchronised swimming. If they include that when who can claim anything else should be excluded? Oregon Slim February 6, 2002, 08:39 PM Back in the 1930's big bridge matches were played in Chicago stadium and broadcast on network radio. Bridge was sufficiently popular that President Roosevelt drew on its lexicon for the moniker of his agenda, the New Deal. At least the participants in bridge matches determine who wins, unlike, eg, ice skating where the winners are determined by seeing whose clothing designer can wrap up the most synthetic breast in the least fabric with the most sequins and by people who just sit on their butts and hold up numbers. And with all the prominent examples of anti-social behaviour by prominent athletes of the athletic sports, maybe we should try some other non-athletic sports too, like spelling, rhetoric, and mumbly-peg, and see if those give us a better class of heroes.

The agonies of victory
BY WILLIAM BURRILL
[Cue the stirring sappy background muzak and the horrible wipeout footage and... action!] VOICE-OVER: "No matter how high the world's finest athletes soar in their bid to touch the stars above, there is always the potential within each and every one that what goes up must come down. Nagano '98. Where you can watch the stars fall. Right on their asses. Good old-fashioned keester-plants. The Winter Olympians. If they're lucky, they'll live." In all the great gobs of Olympic hype you've been subjected to over the past few weeks, you may have noticed that some Olympic winter sports are far more popular than others. The fans love any sport that combines high-speed action with the ever-present possibility of a spectacular wipeout that could cause serious and highly entertaining injuries and/or death. We want TV optics that could be used to illustrate the Agony of Defeat. On the flip side

History Curling is a very old Scottish sport. The oldest know curling stone bears the date 1511, and a painting by Pieter Breughel (1560) shows a Dutch science of the sport. The sport was probably a Scottish invention, because in 1457, the Scottish parliament prohibited golf (!) because they aroused riots. Curling wasn’t endangered by this prohibition, although the rocks were a great weapon. The first stones weighted only 2 to 3 kg. They were called loofies, being they had a design of a hand. There were no precise rules, except if you slid your boulder past the line behind the rink, you’re therefore out of bounds. By 1807 the Royal Montreal Curling Club was formed. Other countries also created curling clubs and the National Curling club of America was formed in 1867. Even with all these clubs, curling was still a regional sport until 1927 when the first Canadian national championship was held. In 1947 the U.S. Women's Curling Association was formed. By 1958, 125 clubs belonged to the U.S. Curling Association. The first world championship was held that same year. Since then more than 30 nations belong to the International Curling Federation. They estimate that about 2 million people participate in the sport worldwide.

And nobody will laugh.
She's not nagging the kids to clean their room. Swisshelm wants her sport, curling, to ride an Olympic publicity wave into the lives of young people around the United States.
"How cool would it be to walk around with a broom?" Swisshelm asked after Canada beat the Americans 9-5 in the women's bronze medal game Thursday. "You'd have to be a pretty cool teen-ager to do that."
Britain beat Switzerland 4-3 for the gold medal in a dramatic finish that was decided in the 10th end.
OK, so curling may have trouble challenging skeleton, short-track speedskating, snowboarding and freestyle skiing for the short attention spans of American teens. It would have helped to win medals, as those sports did, but the curlers have a growing fan base. Team members received e-mails from fraternity houses after their Olympic matches were shown on cable television. "For a 30-plus athlete, it's pretty cool to have fan mail from a 19-year-old," said the 33-year-old Swisshelm.

The United States women lost their semifinal match Wednesday, falling 9-4 to Switzerland in the Winter Olympics. That much most Americans understood. The loss cut the U.S. team out of a chance to win gold or silver, but left open the door for a bronze medal. That fact wasn't lost on the crowd at the Ogden Ice Sheet, either.
Some of the other stuff, well, it'll take awhile.
After all, this is curling.
The good news for curling is that it's gaining fans. That's what being an Olympic sport will do for you. It's not like they didn't sell out the Ice Sheet for this week's competition. There's even a magazine of the sport, appropriately called Sweep.
Perhaps the biggest boost curling has received, though, was this week when the American women earned a spot in the medal round. People who wouldn't know a hog line from a hog call were suddenly checking up on the game. One curling publicist has been receiving 150 e-mails a day. The American team has been receiving 200-300 e-mails daily.
That, of course, doesn't mean curling is everyone's cup of ice. TV talk show host Jay Leno, for one, has had a week's worth of material, compliments of curling.

All the World's an Olympic Sport
by jacknose February 25, 2002 I hereby submit to the wisdom of Vince McMahon, Mark Burnett, and Gatorade. Life is a sport, sport is entertainment, and entertainment is life. I will drink it up from here on out. I will no longer be a sports snob. I will no longer have standards. I will no longer proclaim that curling and ice dancing are not sports. I will no longer question golf, billiards, bowling, surfing, auto racing, snowboarding, and figure skating. I will no longer suggest that sports require athleticism. I will no longer proclaim that judges are for pageants. In the spirit of my transformation, I will petition the IOC for the following “sports” to be included in future Olympic Games: Professional Wrestling. I cannot think of a better sport for the Olympic stage than professional wrestling. Fixed outcomes will be assumed, but we, the audience, will gladly accept the pretentiousness as long as the costumes are tight, the insults are loud, and the faux fighting is raw. Winners will be determined by television ratings. Rubik’s Cube Race.

What's the deal with curling
By Adam Garrett-Clark Published: Thursday, February 21, 2002 No, it has nothing to do with biceps.
Curling is a sport involving stones, ice, brooms, a target and the good old noggin. The game has been described as chess on ice. A curl is the curve a stone makes when it travels down the ice.
It all started in Scotland in the 16th century. The game was first played in Paisley Abbey in 1541. During winter, games were played on frozen ponds, lochs and marshes. The first curling stones came from river bottoms in the Scottish regions of Stirling and Perth.
The 1600s brought stones with handles. This allowed the stones to be delivered in the style seen today. The first curling club convened in Kilsyth Stiringshire in 1716.

http://mnmn.essortment.com/whatiscurling_repl.htm
What is curling?
What is curling? It is often compared to lawn bowling on ice. The unique feature of the game is the use of brooms to sweep the ice.
Like its landlocked cousin, golf, the origins of the sport of curling are murky with both the countries of Holland and Scotland claiming birthrights. Scotland stakes its creationist laurels on the oldest known curling stone with the date 1511 inscribed on its surface. The best evidence trotted out by the Dutch, who popularized ice skating and would seem to have an historical pedigree when it came to games played on the ice, is a painting from the mid-16th century by the Flemish painter Pieter Breughel. The canvas depicts a spirited game of curling on a frozen city canal, replete with curling stones and broom-wielding players. Regardless of its rudimentary beginnings, contemporary curling is a gift of Scotland. The sweeping of stones worn smooth from the scraping of the North Sea across frozen lochs was an established Scottish game by the 1600s and the modern version of curling was a national mania by the 1800s. In 1838 the Royal Caledonian Curling Club (originally called the Grand Caledonian Curling Club) was ushered into existence in Edinburgh and became the definitive governing body for the game. One of the things the RCCC did was standardize the rules for international play and those rules were needed as energetic Scottish emigrants were busily establishing the game on distant shores. The Royal Montreal Curling Club had been set up in Canada in 1807 and there was undoubtedly curling matches taking place on United States lakes from the time of the Revolution. The first organized curling club in the United States was the Orchard Lake Curling Club, chartered in 1832 at the home of Dr. Robert Burns. Dr. Burns and the boys curled on Lake St. Clair, near Detroit, Michigan.

Jasontek to Appear in "Rink & Rock" Event for USA Curling August 27, 2001 Silver screen stars Leslie Nielsen and Paul Gross have agreed to host a special USA Curling production slated for national television broadcast this fall. Nielsen (Airplane, Naked Gun) and Gross (Due South) will be in Ogden Sept. 7-8 for the primary location filming for "Rink & Rock: The World of Curling." The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, under the direction of Pamela McNair, is producing the one-hour special for USA Curling. Filming will take place at The Ice Sheet, the same venue that will house the curling competition for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The program, also supported by the World Curling Federation, will revolve around a pair of "pro-am" games and a community bonspiel. Two teams of U.S. Olympic-hopeful curlers (one men’s, one women’s) will be on the ice against two teams of all-star athletes from other sports. Nielsen and Gross, along with color commentators Colleen Jones (reigning World Curling Champion) and George Karrys (1998 Olympic silver medalist), will interact with the athletes as the games progress. They will use the competition and the community games as a backdrop to explain the sport of curling, its history, and its growing interest in the United States and abroad. "Rink & Rock," slated for national broadcast this fall, is designed as an "Olympic primer" to help educate viewers about the newest Winter Olympic sport of curling, and to increase interest in and awareness of this 500-year-old sport. Local curlers and spectators are invited and encouraged to take part in the community bonspiel, or to just sit in the stands and show their curling and Olympic spirit. Youths and children are also invited, and there is especially a need for "Little Rockers" (children 4-7 already curling or interested in trying). Filming is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday and continue through about 3 p.m. that day. The filming will continue from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
