While the 2002 Winter Olympics were being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, our second graders had many activities in Phy Ed class which were patterned after Olympic events. Students participated in curling, bob sledding, giant slalom skiing, ice hockey, cross country skiing, and mogul skiing. Because they enjoyed their activities, students decided that Winter Olympic sports would be a good topic for their graph. Children and adults in the Milwaukee area were very involved in watching and talking about the Olympics because many of the skaters trained here at the Petit Ice Center. Chris Witty, who won the gold medal for speed skating, and several other famous skaters including Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen, are from our area. To make their graph, students talked about popular Winter Olympic sports and why people liked them the most. Students nominated and voted for their top five favorite Winter Olympic sports then voted again for their individual favorites out of the five choices. The graph was made using AppleWorks with the matching graphics inserted to create the border. We worked together to create three questions which could be answered by using information on the graph. Have fun answering our questions!

Can Olympics' hot niche sports hold their fans?
By Carl Bialik
The winter Olympic Games come every four years, and their golden sheen rubs off on many niche sports that in the years between garner approximately zero interest from the average American viewer.
Bobsleighing, curling, Super G, luge, and short-track speed skating whir in front of the U.S.'s radar screen for 17 days.
The problem for these sports is that the rub-off effect is brief. As the winter Olympic Games fade from memory, so does interest in these sports.
"If past performance is any indication, the Olympics tend not to cause a major boost in the interest of Americans in minor sports," says Marc Ganis, president of sports consulting firm Sportscorp Ltd.

NEW YORK "You do what? Is that the one with the broom?" It's a question curling's Team Lank frequently hears, although more people are familiar with the sport since it became an Olympic sport in 1998. Before then, few people this side of Canada had the slightest clue about the event that involves sliding rocks and sweeping brooms. Team Lank's Erika Brown, left, and Allison Pottinger sweep a path for a shot at the U.S. Olympic Curling Team Trials. "It's still a lot better than it used to be," said "lead" Tracy Sachtjen, "but it still needs more exposure." Certainly, people in the United States don't flock to indoor ice rinks to watch curling, but Team Lank's vice skip Erika Brown said, "The recognition and the knowledge that the game even exists and at least sort of vague idea in your head of what we're talking about it's definitely there now more so than it was 10 or 15 years ago." Team Lank so named for skip (or captain) Patti Lank is one of six women's teams and seven men's teams currently competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Ogden, Utah. The winner of the weeklong, double round-robin men's and women's tournaments qualify for the Salt Lake City Winter Games in February.

Curling is a game played on ice with granite stones Curling is a precision sport similar to bowls or bocce , but played on ice with polished heavy stones rather than plastic balls. The game is generally believed to have been invented in 16th century Scotland , although two paintings by Pieter Brueghel the Elder depict Dutch peasants curling. Whatever the truth of the matter, outdoor curling was very popular in Scotland between the 16th and the 19th centuries when the climate was cold enough to ensure good ice conditions every winter and as a result the international governing body for curling, the World Curling Federation, is based in Perth , Scotland. Curling has been an official sport in the Winter Olympics since the 1998 Winter Olympic Games (some sources also include the competition held in 1924 Winter Olympic Games as an official olympic tournament). The game is currently most firmly established, however, in Canada . The Royal Montreal Curling Club , the first sporting club of any kind in North America , was established in 1807. What events should be added to the Olympics
Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday August 03, 1999 01:54 PM Instead of dueling for dollars, most users feel Tiger Woods and David Duval could play each other for Olympic gold. AP CNN/SI asked users what events they would like to see added to the Summer and Winter Olympics. Many of you thought a good start would be the addition of golf. Have a four-round Olympic golf tournament. The top 100 rated players in the world would participate. To make it attractive to the players, the winner would receive a five-year exemption for all four majors.
Bob Shiffrar Boston, MA Does it really matter? Adding events to the Olympics simply adds to the pile of events NBC wouldn't dare televise for fear of offending the purported gymnastics/track/ice-skating loving masses. Heaven forbid people are exposed to something new, different, and potentially interesting.
Brian Grivna Minneapolis, MN There is one sport I believe has the proper global exposure and is not gender specific that should be added. Although the entire world is not invited, one of the most compelling events going is the Ryder cup. You could have both team and individual events in Golf. How about Tiger Woods versus Paul Lawrie for the gold medal? Or Team Sweden taking on Team Canada for the women's team gold? It's been a long time since 1904.

    History
There is solid evidence that curling was a sport in both Scotland and the Low Countries during the 16th century. The oldest known curling stone, found in Scotland, bears the date 1511, and a 1560 work by the Flemish painter, Pieter Breughel, shows a busy Dutch curling scene, complete with brooms. The game was played on frozen marshes in Scotland, using "channel stones" that had been worn smooth by the action of water, while the Dutch curled on the same frozen canals where ice skating flourished. As with golf, the question of where curling was "invented" will probably never be answered, but the Scots certainly have to be credited both with developing the modern version of the sport and with promoting the game in America. Scottish immigrants organized the Royal Montreal Curling Club in 1807 and the Orchard Lake, Michigan, Club in 1832. The Grand Caledonian Curling Club (later the Royal Caledonian Curling Club) was founded in 1838 at Edinburgh to become Scotland's national governing body and to standardize rules for international play. A branch of the Royal Caledonian was established in Canada in 1852 and the Grand National Curling Club of America, also an affiliate of the Royal Caledonian, was founded in 1867.

Duncan Campbell casts his eyes over the minority sports competing for Olympic recognition.
By Guardian Newspapers, 2/9/2002 Lunching has become an Olympic sport in Salt Lake City and, despite the freezing temperatures, attention has also turned to the hopes of two American sisters bidding desperately for gold in synchronised swimming.
"We were very happy when the committee saw the challenges in such an event and lunching was made an Olympic sport," said Geoff Hansen, the winner of the first gold medal for the event. "Lunching is a full-blown contact sport loaded with punishing ambiguity and emotional twists and turns that dwarf the grand slalom."
Hansen, who is not actually built like a world-class luncher, is an actor taking part in the world premiere of 10 specially commissioned short plays by Utah writers to coincide with the Winter Olympics. In The Gold Lunch by Ron Carlson he plays the part of a man who wins Olympic gold for the subtle way he manages to lunch with his ex-wife, a style that gave him a 9.999 from the judges.
The plays, entitled Cabbies, Cowboys and the Tree of the Weeping Virgin, were the idea of the Salt Lake Acting Company, which is well known in the area for its sharp satire. In Julie Jensen's Water Lilies two sisters, Betty and Bella, discuss the double mandible and the demands of their chosen sport of synchronised swimming: "This is the thing about water ballet. You repeat the same two minutes of your life over and over again. . . And then, preposterous as it may sound, someone else sits out there and judges it. This part was more the same, this thing was less the same and this is your grade for sameness."

    ABOUT CURLING...
The sport ‘Curling’ taking place in the Winter Games is also known for ‘chess on ice’ and had been an Olympic sport since 1924. Curling had originated during the 16th in Scotland where games were seen to be played on winter frozen ponds, lochs and marshes. Some of the earliest curling stones were from the Scottish regions of Stirling and Perth during the year 1511 and reports of curling had come from another part of Scotland during 1541 in Paisley Abbey. During the 1600’s, the early days of the sport, stones were taken from river beds and later, handles were introduced with stones to allow its delivery. The standardisation of the stone and also the use of indoor and refrigerated ice facilities were the few key developments within the sport during the 20th century. The introduction of the Curling Olympic was seen at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games including men’s and women’s tournaments. Click here for latest news on Curling!
