42. The Olympic Effect -- Piqued Interest In Ice Sports Can Help Rinks Go For The Gr
curling is catching on. No sport, however, is expecting a bigger olympic bouncethan the underrated and overlooked art of curling.

The Olympic Effect Piqued interest in ice sports can help rinks go for the green By Stacy St. Clair PHOTOS COURTESY OF JERRY SEARCH/SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SPEED SKATING ASSOCIATION When Salt Lake City organizers extinguished the Olympic flame in February, the United States bid farewell to its most successful Winter Games ever. The gold rush, however, is far from over. Ice arena managers have been inundated with phone calls from wannabe Olympians, who are inquiring about everything from skating to hockey to curling. Interest is so high, the sports' national governing bodies are struggling to keep up with the demand. "It has been incredible," says Karen Kostal, membership services coordinator for the Amateur Speedskating Association. "I don't know if we are going to experience anything like this again." With ice arenas nationwide poised to mine their own gold, facility managers would be wise to turn to experts for assistance. The athletic associations and rinks that produced our latest Olympic heroes are eager to help develop new programs and, in return, build a stronger winter sports tradition. The assistance varies from sport to sport and includes everything from monetary grants to technical advice to moral support. "We're willing to do anything," Kostal says. "Use us. Use us. Use us."

A New Olympic Sport?
By Rod Mar, The Seattle Times

One of the best parts about covering an Olympics is the camaraderie that exists among the shooters.
At the end of any night, you can look around at your peers, and after the subject of "anyone up for a drink or a bite to eat?" comes, "what are you covering tomorrow?"
And the answer to that on any given day might be, "downhill", "ski-jumping", "speed-skating", or "aerials". It's a good thing no one asked me the night before my most unusual assignment of the games. I woke up before dawn to catch a media bus to park city, where we bribed a bus driver to drop us off at a resort called "the canyons" where I was the only photographer with a small group of reporters to cover.... Shovel racing.

TV Schedule THE BASICS: Races are split into two disciplines short track at the Salt Lake Ice Center and long track at the Utah Olympic Oval. There are four events each for men and women in short track and five events each in long track. Long track pairs two skaters at a time racing against the clock. Short track is more like a roller derby race. U.S. FORECAST: Here's a tip. If you want to impress your neighbors, start talking about Apolo Anton Ohno in the next day or two. Because, by next week, the rest of the world will have discovered him.

Origins

The first evidence of curling was found in Scotland in the 16th century. After the fall of Quebec City in 1759, Scottish soldiers had time on their hands and melted down cannon balls to form kettle-shaped irons so they could play their favourite game on the St.Charles River. Scottish settlers across the country started curling clubs and by the 1920s the growth of the sport in Canada had far exceeded its development in any other nation. Today, more than 1.5 million Canadians enjoy the sport.
Curling was a demonstration sport at the 1924, 1932, 1988 and 1992 Olympics, and enjoyed full-medal status for the first time at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games at (Karuizawa) Nagano, Japan.
The Sport
Two four-member teams alternately deliver stones to target circles at the opposite end of a sheet of ice. Each curler - leads first, followed by the seconds, thirds (or vice-skips) and skips - throws two stones, each of which must be delivered (handle released) before sliding over the nearest hogline (boundary line).
With the four-rock free-guard-zone rule being used at the Olympic Games as in all other World Curling Federation events, the leads cannot remove each other's stones.

The IOC is a Bunch of Commie Bastards!
Friday the International Olympic Committe canceled baseball and softball as Olympic sports! At first, like any true blue, red blooded American, I was pissed! Damn commie pinko bastards! Sonsabitches cancel Baseball?! BASEBALL! Then I read that softball great Lisa Fernandez (Three Gold Medals) laments" I feel one person, the president of the IOC, a person from Europe, has taken it upon himself to ruin the lives of millions, actually billions of women. Millions? Billions? Lives ruined? Oh, please. Now I don't care. Posted by JamesPh. at July 10, 2005 08:48 PM
Comments Yeah, you could see this one coming. The girl's fast pitch games is totally, and I mean TOTALLY, dominated by the Americans. Every other country is competing for silver. Unless your American, there is no interest in watching our girls stomp yet another team into the diamond. I mean really, in the warmup to the olympics, the best college teams in the US were lucky to even score a run against our olympic team. (many of the best were shut out). Our women should have thrown a few games I guess.

Remove the ones where winning the olympic medal isn't the high point of your career
[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] link I think you'll find that the other sports you mention (and presumably others inferred) have similar tournament level competition that carries the same level of meaning as your football example (guessing you're referring to World Cup non-US 'football' there) to the competitors. Those events just aren't as news-worthy (sports-worthy?) and have a lower profile than others, but they exist. They compete more than once every four years, you know.

Olympic curlers pay tribute to Scotland's sporting greats
Body Text Wednesday 24 April 2002 Today, Scotland's Curling Olympic champions, led by skip Rhona Martin, visited the temporary Scottish Sports Hall of Fame (SSHOF) exhibition at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh to pay their own personal tribute to Scotland's sporting greats by making their nominations for the SSHOF. In a formal presentation they handed over to the Museum on loan, personal Olympic kit from their historic gold medal winning performance at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games held in Salt Lake City. "Their dedication and success is an inspiration to all..." The skip of the curling team, Rhona Martin said: "Winning gold for Scotland and Team GB was a fabulous feeling. I am delighted to be asked to lend personal Olympic kit to the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame exhibition in which so many of Scotland's sporting greats are profiled. Competing at an Olympic Games is a fantastic experience and I hope seeing some of our Olympic kit up close so soon after our win will help bring the Olympic Games alive for the exhibition's younger visitors."
The exhibition profiles 100 of Scotland's greatest sportsmen and women including 1924 Olympic track gold medallist Eric Liddell, 1967 World Curling champion Chuck Hay and 1994 Commonwealth Games champion Yvonne Murray Mooney MBE. HRH Princess Royal and Sir Jackie Stewart are Patrons of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.

Sandra Schmirler Curling
Sandra Schmirler was skip for one of the dominant rinks in women’s curling during the 1990s; her crowning achievement was winning the first gold medal for women’s curling at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Through recognition of her performances, she also raised the profile of women’s curling at the national and international levels. She was born at Biggar, Saskatchewan in 1963, the youngest of three daughters of Art and Shirley Schmirler. Growing up, and attending Biggar Composite School, she excelled both academically and athletically, participating in swimming, volleyball, fastball, badminton, and track. It was curling, however, which she played from the age of twelve at the Biggar Curling Club, which emerged as her favourite sport - she would play on two provincial championship teams while in high school. Sandra went on to study physical education at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. During her last two years there, she curled on the Carol Davis rink. After graduating, she began curling as third with Kathy Fahlman. It was on this team that she met Jan Betker, who would become a close friend and life-long curling partner. After a disappointing performance at the 1990 provincial championships, Sandra decided to form her own team. In addition to Betker as third, she recruited Marcia Gudereit and Joan McCusker as lead and second respectively. This team won six provincial championships during the decade, and three Canadian championships, in 1993, 1994 and 1997. The team would go on to win the world championship in each of those years, a feat which at that time was unprecedented. No women’s team composed of the same four members had ever won more than one world title.

County woman raised curling to Olympic sports stature
Mary Lane Gallagher, The Bellingham Herald
Sudden Valley teenager Brendan Galletly has Sofia Wallace - and Iceland - to thank for introducing him to his favorite sport. Galletly, 16, first saw curling on television at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. He was mystified - and hooked. "I didn't understand it, so it just pulled me in," he said. But Galletly and the rest of the audience nearly missed the sport's Olympic introduction. Curling needed to be established in 25 countries before it could become a medal sport at Nagano, and in '98 only 24 countries had curling organizations.

The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics
The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

All the World's an Olympic Sport
by jacknose February 25, 2002 I hereby submit to the wisdom of Vince McMahon, Mark Burnett, and Gatorade. Life is a sport, sport is entertainment, and entertainment is life. I will drink it up from here on out. I will no longer be a sports snob. I will no longer have standards. I will no longer proclaim that curling and ice dancing are not sports. I will no longer question golf, billiards, bowling, surfing, auto racing, snowboarding, and figure skating. I will no longer suggest that sports require athleticism. I will no longer proclaim that judges are for pageants. In the spirit of my transformation, I will petition the IOC for the following “sports” to be included in future Olympic Games: Professional Wrestling. I cannot think of a better sport for the Olympic stage than professional wrestling. Fixed outcomes will be assumed, but we, the audience, will gladly accept the pretentiousness as long as the costumes are tight, the insults are loud, and the faux fighting is raw. Winners will be determined by television ratings. Rubik’s Cube Race.
